Zoo U: Merit Badge University-North

Event Details

Scouts are invited to participate in a Merit Badge University in conjunction with the ABQ BioPark at the Zoo and the Botanic Garden. Youth will have the chance to choose one merit badge adventure for the day. (Please notice that these five merit badge classes are held at two (2) different locations.)

  • For Architecture, Scouts will explore how buildings are planned, constructed, and used. Scouts will use math, science and art to learn how to design spaces that are useful, safe and attractive.
  • In Insect Study, scouts can glance into the strange and fascinating world of insects, learning about how these tiny creatures see, hear, taste, smell and feel the world around them.
  • Consider Landscape Architecture, learning about how landscape architects design and plan the various outdoor spaces in modern communities– neighborhood parks, soccer fields, school grounds, places of worship, and lakes– creating outdoor places that people will care about and want to visit.
  • To earn the Mammal Study Merit Badge, you’ll learn about the animal kingdom, food chains, human’s impact on our environment and more.
  • In Reptile and Amphibian Study, Scouts who are interested in snakes, turtles, lizards, and alligators and frogs will get a chance to have a new appreciation for these amazing creatures by imitating their sounds, learning about their life cycle and observing their habitats

There are 5 different Merit Badges Offered with only 22 spots in each class so sign up soon for ONE merit badge class. As per 2025 Guide to Advancement changes, scouts need approval from their unit leader to begin a merit badge. Scouts should bring a signed blue card or print the downloadable file linked to the right and have their unit leader or delegate sign it.  As per Guide to Safe Scouting - Section 5, all participants must have a printed copy of Parts A/B of the BSA Medical Form filled out and signed by a parent or guardian.  We will NOT be collecting/holding these forms but scouts must have it WITH THEM during the event.  A downloadable copy of that medical form is linked to the right. Scouts will need to provide their own lunch. See Information sheet linked to the right for more information and details about the event.. Registration will close Monday, April 14. Due to the popularity of this event, there are no late registrations accepted at the council or the zoo on the day of the event.
