The Seneca Waterways NYLT Program builds Team Development and Leadership Skills.

Advanced Leadership training for youth is one of the greatest experiences in Scouting. Learn and use lifelong leadership skills as a Scout.

NYLT is a leadership and team development experience developed by Scouts BSA to enable Scouting youth to lead their Scouting Troop, Crew or Ship. The program uses the Aims and Methods of Scouting to teach youth the skills of leadership and teamwork in the setting of an ideal Scouts BSA troop.. The experience is conducted in the outdoors and is entirely youth-led with adult supervision. Many youth who have taken NYLT describe it as one of their greatest Scouting experiences. Concepts and skills learned during NYLT are easily applicable to a wide variety of leadership opportunities both inside and outside of Scouting.

During NYLT, Scouts will spend 6 days in a camping environment that exemplifies the ideals of Scouting as Robert Baden-Powell described when he started the Scouting movement. The experience combines didactic discussions (presented by youth) with a series of challenges that enable participants working in patrols to immediately apply leadership and teamwork principles. Participants see “youth-led” principles modeled by youth staff as well as practicing those principles in their patrols.

Seneca Waterways Council operates one of the largest and most successful NYLT programs in the Northeast at the Walmsley Sawyer Training Center, located at Camp Cutler. Enrollment is strictly limited to 48 participants to maintain the quality of the program. Youth attempting to register for a filled course will be put on a waiting list.

To be eligible to attend NYLT, Scouts BSA members must be 13-17 and have achieved First Class rank or higher. Venturers and Sea Scouts must be 14 or have completed 8th grade.

COVID-19 Information:  (Updated: January 2024):  We will follow all of the guidelines for COVID-19 as set forth by NY State Department of Health and enacted through the Seneca Waterways Council.
