Introduction to Oudoor Leader Skills (IOLS) Training at BDSR

Event Details

This course is designed to teach you the skills Scouts need and to help enhance your job performance though the use of the "Patrol Method”. 

IOLS Training will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday and end at 4 p.m. Participants must be 18+, registered with current SYT.

Registration fee is $25 and includes meals, awards, and material, or $10 if you are registered with your unit for the camporee and do not need food.

Position-Specific training should be taken before this course, online at the BSA Learn Center (www.my.scouting.org). See below for additional info about accessing prerequisites. For IOLS: Safeguarding Youth, Hazardous Weather (30 min.) Scoutmasters/ASM's: It is highly recommended that you take Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster (S24) (online or in person) training before you attend this course. To be completely trained as a Scout leader you must take Scoutmaster Leader Specific Leader Training (S24) (in person or online).

Camping: If you’re coming up with your unit for Spring Camporee, you will be able to camp with your unit. The entire weekend will be outdoors.

  • Annual Health & Medical Record form Parts AB
  • Copies of online training certificates: SYT, BALOO, Hazardous Weather
  • Field Uniform
  • Shelter: tent and ground tarp
  • Sleep system:  sleeping bag or blankets, pad, pillow?  If you don’t have a sleeping pad (foam or inflatable) a few extra blankets can be folded to make a pad.
  • Flashlight
  • Rain gear
  • Closed toe shoes - no sandals
  • Warm clothes (check the weather forecast)
  • Minimal toiletries. (Tooth brush etc)
  • Pen/paper
  • Eating utensils (plate or bowl, knife/fork/spoon, cup)
  • Water bottle
  • Chair (very important for your comfort!)

  • go to my.scouting.org and log on.
  • Click on ScoutingU (right side red block) - That opens a new tab
  • Search for the training you’re looking for
  • Click on the learning plan. Then click Enroll.
  • Select Launch Course for each desired module above
  • When finished with each course wait for the music to finish
  • To get to the next course hit the back arrow - top right side
  • KEY: When finished with each course wait for the music to finish and wait to see the Scouting U , Learning, Challenge, Lead Image before you hit the back arrow to take the next course.
