Wilderness First Aid (Red Cross)

In cooperation with the American Red Cross, the Greater New York Councils BSA is proud to host Wilderness First Aid. This program is designed to teach individuals how to deal with emergency situations by using first aid skills in a delayed-help environment. The program is based on the 2010 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and offers enhanced content and topics to meet OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs and has been updated to reflect the latest emergency cardiovascular care science.
The Wilderness and Remote First Aid program is appropriate for audiences from youth-serving organizations as well as adults who participate in outdoor recreational activities or who work in wilderness or remote settings where emergency medical services (EMS) response is more than 1 hour away. This course will fulfill requirements for Wilderness First Aid such as at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Program topics include;
- Integration of emergency action principles in a wilderness setting
- Performing primary and secondary
- Head (brain), neck and spinal injuries
- Hypothermia
- Heat-related emergencies
- Altitude-related illnesses
- Allergies and anaphylaxis
- Wounds and wound infection
- Bone and joint injuries
- Burns Submersion incidents
- Bites and stings
Candidates who attend all lectures, demonstrate proficiency in taught skills and who pass a final written exam will receive a Wilderness First Aid certificate from the American Red Cross. Please note that this is a pass/fail course and enrollment in this class does not guarantee you will receive the certification.
Prerequisites: Must be at least 14 years old and hold current adult CPR/AED certification
