Welcome to the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)! It is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and Webelos/AOL den overnighters.


WHO: required training for pack and den camping

WHEN: August 7-8, 2026

  • check-in at 6:00 PM on Friday
  • check-out at 4:00 PM on Saturday

WHERE: Sandscrest Scout Reservation

  • Address: 192 McColloch Drive, Wheeling

FEES: $40 Early-Bird (by July 17)   |   $50 Regular (after July 17)

  • it is encouraged that packs pay the cost for their leaders to become trained

REGISTRATION CLOSES: August 1

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

  • Prerequisite:  BALOO training is comprised of two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader. The online component MUST be completed prior to the practical component. The online training contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the practical training and can be taken through your My.Scouting login through the Scouting U Volunteer Learn Center on the right side of your homescreen.
  • Scouting America Registration:  All participants must be currently registered in Scouting America.
  • Safeguarding Youth Training:  All participants are required to be current on their Safeguarding Youth Training. This can be completed online prior to arrival online at www.My.Scouting.org. Please provide a copy of your completed SYT training certificate and bring to the event.
  • Medical Form:  All participants must bring a copy of their Annual Health and Medical Record, Parts A & B. 

By completing this training course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA camping program.
  • Demonstrate the skills and confidence necessary to plan and carry out a successful, first-time Cub Scout–level camping activity.
  • Describe the resources available from the BSA and other sources to carry out this activity.
  • Discuss the requirements for successful completion of this activity
