HOVC Orienteering Merit Badge

The Heart of Virginia Council (HOVC) is offering Scouts an opportunity to earn the Orienteering Merit Badge - rain or shine!

When:

- Part 1 – Saturday, May 6, 2023 Time: 9:00AM – 4:00PM

- Part 2 – Sunday, May 7, 2023 Time: 9:00AM – 4:00PM

- Part 3 – Saturday, May 13, 2023 Time: 9:00AM – 4:00PM

Where:

- Parts 1 and 2 will be held at Robious Landing Park (Shelter #2), 3800 James River Road, Midlothian, VA 23113

- Part 3 will be held at R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks, 201 Enon Church Road, Chester, VA 23836

Description:

During the first two days, Scouts will learn the fundamentals of the sport of Orienteering and work on the merit badge’s requirements 1 through 8. On the third day, Scouts will use the skills they’ve learned to complete requirements 9 and 10 at the Central Virginia Orienteering Club’s Scout Orienteering Day (https://scoutingevent.com/602-2023OrienteeringDay).

*It is recommended that Scouts participating in this merit badge have previously completed the First Class rank requirement 4a.

Cost: $15 per Scout

What Scouts Will Need to Bring:

- Blue Card

- Orienteering compass (a few will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis) **Compasses need to be baseplate-style and not lensatic.

- Water bottle or hydration pack

- Packed lunch (light snacks will be provided)

- Clothing appropriate for the weather (long pants and sturdy shoes are required)

- Medical Form, Parts A & B
