Keynote Speaker: David Lippitt (NST 10 Chair-Elect)
Keynote Address: “After the Bankruptcy, Where Are We and Where Are We Going?”
Dear Fellow Commissioners and Scouters,
Welcome to the 2023 Territory 10 College of Commissioner Science! This year’s College will occur over one evening and one day, to maximize attendees' engagement while minimizing their time commitment.
Our theme concerns dealing positively and proactively with change. The past several years have certainly been one of the most change-filled periods the history of BSA commissioning. While it is always rewarding to be of service, I am sure all of you have been challenged by helping all our units and leaders respond in a consistently positive manner. How unit leaders respond to change will have a significant impact on the future of the Scouting program and on our youth. Creating an environment where our unit leaders embrace change not just as a challenge but as an opportunity to improve our service to youth can be one of the commissioner’s most significant contributions. It certainly is a task that is most demanding of our skills.
The 2023 College administrative team and Territory 10 Commissioners have put together an amazing opportunity to deal with change by refreshing established practices, hearing new ideas, and using both to support the adult leaders and the youth that they serve. We invite you to gather virtually with your fellow commissioners, enjoy the fellowship of common service, and recharge your energies.
We have designed this year’s college to occur over 2 days. In addition to addressing Zoom fatigue, this has allowed us to schedule 7 hours of instructional time in addition to our keynote address. This will allow everyone to complete a Bachelors or Masters degree, and possibly to attend other courses as well. Our outstanding staff will be offering over 50 exciting courses this year. This year we are also offering Commissioner Basic training as part of this year’s College. We are not offering the Doctoral program as part of the April 28-29 College. This is being offered as an in-person retreat, hosted by Twin Rivers Council, on June 2-3. See our flyer for more information about the Doctoral Retreat.
In closing, thank you for your dedication to unit service! I hope to see you during this year’s College.
Yours in Commissioner Service,
Craig Kaplan, Chancellor
