October 9-11, 2026.

This 2 day overnight course trains interested scouters ages 18 and older to serve as Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructors. 

Level 1 Instructors are the backbone of Scouting's outdoor ethics program, providing instruction to individuals and units wishing to adopt cutting-edge outdoor ethics into their unit programs. Level 1 Instructors are specifically commissioned to teach the Scouting America Leave No Trace Basics course and to qualify individuals for the Scouting America Leave No Trace Basics card. Each Scouting American Level 1 Instructors course is led by a recognized Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor, so your Level 1 Insturctor standing is recognized nationally by Scouting America's partner, Leave No Trace. 

This course is a two-day program that teaches the ideals and practices of Outdoor Ethics and the hands-on ways you can show your unit on how to live the principles. Adult participants will learn about the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and the skills necessary to implement these ethics while in the outdoors. The course also includes basic teaching techniques and, as such, will help a scouter teach Outdoor Ethics to other adults and youth. 

Participants should be prepared for a short backpacking trek on one of the days and to give a brief presentation on a Leave No Trace topic. 

In addition to weather appropriate attire, all participants must bring their Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A/B) to the training. The AHMR can be found at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/

Participants should be prepared to camp overnight, bring appropriate camping gear for the weather, and supply their own food and water for the weekend.
