What: Earn your Archeology Merit Badge at a real field school! Scouts will enjoy both a digital merit badge class and a in-person Field Day with fun programming and educational experiences. This one-of-a-kind event includes participating in real, guided archeological research. Scouts will get to assist the Center for American Archeology on a site visit, participating in field work and digs that contribute to archeological research and knowledge

Cost: $35 per BSA Scout, $15 per adult

COVID Precautions: The in-person Field Day compenent of this event will follow all local CDC guidance along with additional measures required by the BSA and Center for American Archeology. The Field Day will be conducted entirely outdoors with social distancing and masks enforced. PLEASE NOTE MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES DURING THE FIELD DAY. Participants are asked to bring their own masks.

Additional precautions are listed below. Please read these completely to be aware of your responsibility in keeping everyone safe:

  • Temperatures of participants and staff will be taken using forehead thermometers. Participants will be screened twice: on arrival and after lunch. Anyone presenting symptoms will not be allowed to participate.
  • Participants will be assigned a restroom. Restroom assignments will prioritize grouping families and Units together first. All four bathrooms on-site are single use.
  • Dig tools will be sanitized after each use and participants will only use one set of tools the entire program. Scouts will not be allowed to exchange tools at any time.
  • We will not be providing food at this event. Instead we request that participants bring their own lunch/snacks and their own water to limit gatherings around a common water source. Bottled water will be made available in the case of emergencies.
  • Two participants will need to be at each dig site and will be working in relatively close proximity. However, we are requesting that a parent, if possible, or Scout from the same Unit (if parents are unavailable) are partnered together at dig sites.
  • All participants need to complete the Center for American Archeology's COVID-19 waiver (see attached) in addition to the risk waiver.

This is your chance to be a real archeologist!

This event is open to troops and individuals.

Troops must provide appropriate supervision in accordance with BSA youth protection guidelines.
