2022 Back Country Leadership Skills Training
GSLAC Back Country Leadership Skills Training Course
This course is designed for the adult Scouter and experienced youth Scouts who understand the role High Adventure plays in keeping older youth involved in Scouting. This course will give you the skills and confidence to realize your vision of High Adventure in your troop or crew. If you are a first-time Philmont Crew Advisor, this training will jump-start your ability to prepare your crew for a peak Philmont trek. Your Council High Adventure Training Team will help you deliver the promise of Adventure to your Scouts and Venturers.
The training begins with a Friday night indoor classroom session in which we'll check gear, organize into a crew structure, and review our route. Saturday morning we will load our packs and start our overnight backpacking hike, stopping periodically to learn skills such as planning/training, managing risk, equipment/gear, physical conditioning, trail hygiene, food and nutrition, trek safety, wilderness navigation, water purification/treatment, and expedition behavior.
The course includes Friday night light cracker barrel, Saturday breakfast/lunch/supper, Sunday breakfast, trail snacks. If you have crew gear you want to try out, feel free to bring it along, but we will provide all crew gear except tents—we have a few available for loan this weekend but prefer you bring your own tent. We will send you updates via email, including a final note week before this training event.
