WILDERNESS FIRST AID TRAINING

Sponsored by the Greater St Louis Area Council

Curriculum Developed by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute

& Endorsed by the BSA

This Wilderness First Aid (WFA) 16-hour blended learning certification course meets requirements for BSA’s National High Adventure Bases (Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier, Summit Bechtel Reservation) and is recommended for registered Scout Leaders, Venturers and Scouts who are planning back country camping, hiking, canoeing, and other high adventure activities. Participants must be 14 years old or older. This certification is good for two years.

Participants must be currently certified in Adult CPR/AED by ECSI, American Heart Association, or American Red Cross when taking Wilderness First Aid. GSLAC offers this certification with information/registration at https://scoutingevent.com/312-2425CPR.

To become certified in WFA, you must complete both an on-line course and an in-person Skills Session.

1. Register for ECSI BSA Wilderness First Aid Navigate Course at https://www.psglearning.com/catalog/productdetails/9781284224719.

2. Click “Add To Cart”.

3. On the next screen you will add the special 35% off Promotion code to pay just $26.00.

-If you register and pay 8/1/24 - 10/1/24 use this code: BSAQ324

-If you register and pay 10/1/24 - 1/1/25 use this code: BSAQ424

4. Follow the additional directions and complete this on-line course. Plan on eight hours to complete.

5. You must pass the on-line course test with an 85% score.

6. Email your WFA Navigate completion certificate to Jeanne Burke at jeannerose3456@gmail.com

After you register for the ECSI WFA Navigate, register for your GSLAC WFA In-person Skills Session on a registration link on right side of this page. You don’t need to complete the ECSI WFA Navigate before registering for the in-person session, but you must complete WFA Navigate as described above prior to taking the In-person Skills Session. This will run from 9:00am – 6:00pm. Registration is $60 and includes the pocket-sized Wilderness First Aid Field Guide 3rd Edition you will receive at your session.

Bring any gear/equipment and first aid supplies you expect to have on your trek to the Skills Session. Overnight tent camping is available for your convenience if you are traveling a great distance but is not required. Bring your lunch, snacks, and any utensils you need. We will provide coffee, tea bags, hot chocolate, and water. We will not provide any food. There will be a lunch break but it won’t be long enough to depart the training site, get lunch, and return.

We will follow current BSA Covid guidelines for the date of your session. During skills session scenario work, you will work in small groups, at times closely with each other. We will minimize time working together but will meet course requirements for certification. Please contact staff if/when you have any concerns. Our priority is protecting participants and staff while completing the WFA certification.

If needed, you must register for Adult CPR/AED certification separately, starting HERE. Most participants do CPR/AED Skills Session and WFA Skills Session on the same date.
