BSA Rangemaster Training (Camp Rotary)
Scouting America requires all Cub Scout Range and Target Activities (including Cub Scout archery, BB guns, wrist rockets/slingshots, catapults or rockets) to be supervised by a Scouting America certified Rangemaster. At the Cub Scout level, BB guns and archery are only allowed at district and council-operated events, and may NOT be conducted at the pack or den level. Archery Rangemasters may also conduct archery events at the troop, crew, and post level.
This training is a six-hour course that covers setting up a range, safety, handling equipment, maintaining and storing equipment, and instructing Scouts. This certification is valid for two years from the course completion date.
Sign-up is limited to the first 20 people. Must be at least 18 to attend. Must bring a BSA Health Form (parts A & B).
All range and target activities held during a day camp, short-term camp, or long-term camp will follow the current NCAP standards. All range and target activities held outside of a council’s camp will follow the program as outlined in the National Range and Target Activities Manual (www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/range-activities).
The National Range and Target Activities Manual includes all of the information you will need pertaining to appropriate guns used at each level of Scouting, the required range supervision, and training that youth need to safely participate in the program.
Archery, BB gun shooting, and slingshot shooting are restricted to day camps, Cub Scout, Webelos Scout & AOL Scout long term camps, council-managed short-term camps, or council activities where there are properly trained supervisors and where all standards for Scouting America range & target activities are enforced. All range and target activities in the Cub Scout program must be supervised by a qualified range master who is at least 18 years of age and meets the minimum requirements.
Archery, BB gun shooting, and slingshot shooting are not approved unit activities.
The use of pellet air rifles is restricted to Webelos Scouts and AOL Scouts in a Scouting America accredited long term camp setting only.
Youth in the Lion program are approved to participate in district or council run archery and slingshot activities only.
Airsoft guns are not approved for use in the Cub Scout shooting sports program.
All local, state, and federal laws for BB guns, archery, and slingshot shooting must be followed.
