2026 Fundamentals of Training (Trainer's EDGE)
Fundamentals of Training is intended to help develop the platform skills of a trainer, and is the direct successor to the previous Trainer's EDGE course. Only practice can polish your skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media. This course is recommended for any Scout or Scouter who delivers instruction to others, and is a required supplemental training for Wood Badge and NYLT Staffs. For youth taking the course, it is recommended that they are at least age 13+ and First Class rank.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All participants must prepare and bring with them a 6-8 minute presentation on the topic of their choosing. You will be asked to deliver this presentation to your small group (about 5-7 people) during the final module of the course. If your topic requires materials, please ensure you bring enough for a small group.
Fundamentals of Training is split into two parts:
Fundamentals Part 1: Science of Training - This course is designed to help Scouts and Scouters, regardless of their training experience, identify effective training methods for a variety of purposes. It will help freshen up the skills of current Scouting America trainers, as well. The skills and strategies presented here have been shown to improve teaching and learning—and will be of value to you, not only in your role in Scouting, but also in the ways that you communicate with others.
Fundamentals Part 2: Craft of Training - This course is the second part of the train-the-trainer continuum. As trainers develop their training skills, this course provides an opportunity for trainers to practice and refine their abilities through experiential learning, paired with feedback from faculty members and peers. This course also supplements the training development sessions offered during faculty development for advanced leadership training courses.
