2027 Fundamentals of Training (Trainer's EDGE)

Fundamentals of Training is intended to help develop the platform skills of a trainer, and is the direct successor to the previous Trainer's EDGE course. Only practice can polish your skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media. This course is recommended for any Scout or Scouter who delivers instruction to others, and is a required supplemental training for Wood Badge and NYLT Staffs. For youth taking the course, it is recommended that they are at least age 13+ and First Class rank.
This course is designed to help Scouts and Scouters, regardless of their training experience, identify effective training methods for a variety of purposes. It will help freshen up the skills of current Scouting America trainers, as well. The skills and strategies presented here have been shown to improve teaching and learning—and will be of value to you, not only in your role in Scouting, but also in the ways that you communicate with others. Participants will also have an opportunity to practice and refine their abilities through experiential learning, paired with feedback from faculty members and peers.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARTICIPANTS: As part of the training, all participants will deliver an ~8 minute presentation on a topic of their choosing, ideally to teach a skill or hobby of their liking. Please prepare this short presentation prior to arrival, and if materials are required bring enough for up to 7 others to participate.
