Inspired by the Alaskan gold rush, the Klondike Derby is Scouting’s signature winter challenge—part adventure race, part skills gauntlet, and 100% fun. Patrols (“dog teams”) pull their sleds from station to station (“cities”), tackling real-world Scouting scenarios to earn gold nuggets and bragging rights.

How It Works

• Patrols as Teams: 2–8 Scouts form a team with a patrol leader as the “musher.”
• Trail Map: Each team receives a route map and sealed instructions at check-in—then it’s off to the first city.
• Skill Stations (“Cities”): Expect hands-on challenges in first aid, knots & lashings, fire building, navigation, shelter, cold-weather safety, teamwork, and leadership.
• Scoring: Judges award gold nuggets based on safety, skill, teamwork, and time. Turn in your nuggets at the finish to see how your patrol ranks.

What to Bring:

• Patrol Sled (homemade or unit sled) with required gear list (issued in the leader guide).
• Cold-Weather Essentials: layers, hat/gloves, waterproof boots, full water bottles, and a day’s worth of trail snacks.
• Unit Preparedness: permission forms, medicals/health forms, and a charged whistle/flashlight per patrol.

• Top Patrols: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
• Best Sled Spirit, Best Trail Etiquette, and Musher’s Choice special awards.
• Every participant receives a 2026 Konza Klondike patch.

Safety First

• This is a cold-weather event. We follow Scouting America’s winter safety guidelines, enforce buddy systems, and may adjust the schedule or the course due to weather. Come prepared, stay hydrated, and communicate with staff if you need help.

Who Can Participate:

• Scouts BSA patrols and Venturing crews (units may enter multiple patrols).
• Newer Scouts are welcome—stations are designed for both learning and competition.
