STEM University 2019

Event Details

The NCAC STEM Committee is hosting STEM University on June 15, 2019 at MTC in Reston, VA!

Address:Microsoft Technology Center | 12012 Sunset Hills Rd| Reston, VA 20190

The event includes a youth science fair, STEM Scouts activities, cub scout Supernova Activities, Scouts BSA/Venturer Scout Nova Award, and adult leader trainings on STEM. 

 



Who should attend? 

All Scouting leaders

  • Do you want to learn about the Nova Awards?
  • Do you want to learn what's new in STEM? What is STEM Scouts and how is that different from STEM in Scouting?
  • Do you want to know how to get your unit started with the STEM program? Send the parents and unit leaders!
  • Would you like to know where to go for STEM info? How to find out about STEM events around Council? 

All youth

  • Bring a display of your science project - we are hosting NCAC's 4th science fair! This can count for many of your Nova requirements - to participate in a local science fair.  
  • Meet a STEM Professional - talk to a scientist or engineer. 
  • Cub Scouts: the activities include requirements towards the Alvarez and Townes Supernova Awards
  • Scouts BSA & Venture Scouts: 2 hour activities to earn the new Nova Award "Up and Away"
    Email us if you are working on your Thomas Edison, Sally Ride or Wright Brothers' req 6 or Bernard Harris req 7 and need a place to present to a Cub Scout Den!


Schedule (adults): 

11:30 - 12PM: Opening Session - What's New in STEM

12PM - 12:50PM:   Period 2:  Einstein Science Fair, Meet a STEM Professional or STEM Scouts - what is it about?

1PM - 2:50PM:    Period 3 & 4 classes (class choices include: STEM in your Unit | All about the Science! | Nova Counselor/Supernova Mentor Training Certification)

3PM - 3:15PM: Q&A and Wrap-Up

11:30 - 12PM: STEM Puzzles & Games

12PM - 12:50PM: Period 2 Meet a STEM Professional & NCAC Einstein's Science Fair 

All youth are welcome to bring a poster board and present their science project! This activity also supports the requirement in many Supernovas to participate in a science fair. Please see the Science Fair guidelines attached, on the right column of this page.

1 PM - 2:50PM:  Youth workshops

Scouts BSA & Venturers: Up and Away Nova class

Cubs & Junior STEM Scouts: All About the Scientific Method & Meet Famous Scientists of the Past

3:00 PM: Youth return to main hall for closing 


Registration: Everyone is welcome! We encourage you to read the STEM University Course Catalog (downloadable attachment on right column of this page) to get familiar with the course offerings.

  • Uniforms: Scouts and Scouters should wear Class A uniform, but all are welcome
  • Food: Everyone should bring their own snacks and lunch to enjoy during lunch hour.
