The Colonial District will host its first 40-kilometer 'Carpe Adventure Trek,' or CAT. The event will challenge units to support each other - both as individual units and collectively during the event - to complete a day-long CAT. There will also be a 20-kilometer CAT for units seeking to complete a shorter distance.
The CAT will step-off at 6:00 a.m. for the 40 kilometer CAT (7:00 a.m. for the 20 kilometer) from Good Shepherd Parish (8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309). The CAT will include portions of the George Washington Trail, cross the Potomac via the pedestrian sidewalk on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge toward National Harbor, and back to Good Shepherd. The rain date for this event will be March 17, 2018.
While the CAT is sponsored by the Colonial District, participating units from across the Colonial District must contribute adult volunteer support to execute the CAT. Support levels are linked to the number of hikers from the respective unit; units with large numbers of hikers will be tasked to run full-service support stops supplying water, first aid, etc., and units with fewer hikers will be tasked to run smaller support stops or perform other duties as assigned such as checking-in participants and volunteers, provide bicycle escorts, drive shuttle vans.
Units must provide adult volunteer support in order to register for the CAT. Participating units may not register Scouts from other (i.e., non-volunteering) units. An example of the number of hikers to adult volunteers follows.
REGISTRATION
Unit Point of Contact (POC) -- All units must provide a POC for the CAT. The unit POC will receive communications (emails) regarding the CAT, and be responsible for collecting hiker permissions slips and medical forms.
Hikers -- All units must provide information on the Scouts (Boy Scouts, Venturers, Teams and Posts), and adult leaders (Scouters and parents) who will hike. Every hiker must have a buddy; odd numbers of hikers will form a group of three buddies for the CAT. Cub Scouts, siblings and adults not affiliated with Scouting (except a parent) are not eligible to hike.
Adult Volunteers -- To support the hike, units will need to provide an adult volunteer(s) for a 5-hour shift (AM or PM) on the day of the hike according to the formula below. Note that volunteers must be a named individual (no TBDs: To Be Determined) with cell phone / email information to finalize your registration.
