Climbing Instructor Training

Are you interested in taking your unit rock climbing or helping out with council climbing events?
The climbing instructor training course gives you the skills needed to conduct a rock-climbing activity that meets the requirements of Scouting America’s Climb On Safely framework and Belay On guidelines. The course is over 2 full days. You must attend both days to gain certification.
The first day is on Sunday May 3rd at Donald E. Scott Colorado Adventure Point, 10455 W 6th Avenue, Ste 150, Lakewood, CO 80215 from 8.00am – 6:00pm with the second day on Saturday May 9th at McNeil Scout Ranch, 22799 Elbert Road, Elbert, CO 80106 from 7:00am – 5:00pm.
Scouting America has two levels of instructor certification. The course will cover the skills for both levels.
A Level I instructor will come out of the course with, amongst others, these skills:
- Be able to earn the climbing merit badge.
- Be able to teach the skills in the climbing merit badge.
- Be the second set of eyes - be able to evaluate anchors.
- Be able to act as an instructor in a group environment.
A Level II instructor will come out of the course with these additional skills:
- Be able to build anchors.
- Be able to conduct rescues.
- Act as the lead instructor in a group environment.
Level I certification is valid for 1 year. Level II certification is valid for 3 years.
To obtain a Level II certification you must have previously held a Level I or Level II certification. If you think you already have the Level I skill set, then please reach out to the contact listed below at least 3 weeks prior to the course to arrange a session where your skills can be evaluated.
COST
Cost of training is $50. Lunch will be provided each day.
