RATA - Muzzleloader Basic/Instructor

Event Details

This course includes classroom and range time learning to how to teach the sport of shooting Muzzle Loading rifles, shotguns and pistols. Instructor Candidates learn how to teach the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; firearms parts and operation; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting various styles; cleaning, and continued opportunities for skill development. Instructor Candidates will receive the NRA Basic Muzzleloader Instructor Manual & CD, Basics of Muzzleloader Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, take a Basics of Muzzleloading Shooting Instructor Examination, and course completion card.

In order to take this course you must pass the pre-qualification test which includes firearms safety, shooting evaluation etc. You also must have had Basic Instructor Training within the last 2 years if the BIT is not included in this course. There will be a BIT course October 18th.

Please note that this course includes both the Student level and instructor level portions. During the student level, you will be instructed on fundamental procedures that may allow you to successfully pass the instructor pre-qualification.

Please be prepared and bring the following items:

 All attendees must bring a signed BSA Health Form Parts A & B to participate, if under 18, it must be signed by a parent/guardian.

Adults 18 and older must bring proof of current Safeguarding Youth Protection Training; this can be completed via My.Scouting.org

  • Tent, sleeping bag, pillow, pad or cot; everything you need to camp outside for the weekend. We will have access to shower facilities so please bring toiletries, towels, soap, shampoo, etc.
  • Appropriate clothing for Colorado’s changing weather (we will be shooting outside in the afternoons)
  • Water bottle, rain gear, etc.
  • Eye and ear protection (this will be provided if you do not have it)
  • All meals are provided, and you can bring additional snacks and drinks if you desire.
  • Pen/pencil/highlighter to take notes. A 2” or 3” three ring binder will come in handy for the class materials.
  • Please do NOT bring any guns or ammunition, these will be provided by the class.

Please arrive 20 minutes early (5:40pm) Friday night to check in and be ready for a 6pm start. Allow enough time to deal with the rush hour traffic in the Denver metro area. Dinner will NOT be served Friday night so plan accordingly. There will be a Cracker Barrel with snacks on Friday night. Parking will be in the field east of the dining hall. The classes will be held in Gilwell Hall below the dining hall. Please walk around the north side to the back underneath the dining hall for access.

To be eligible for the 50% off RATA Event Discount, Scouts are Trustworthy and agree to the following terms:

  • Sign up for as many of the RATA Training classes that you want to take in 2026, before or after the events you help with.
  • Actually help run ranges at any 2 Council/District RATA events in 2026. One day at two events or two days at one event.
  • Shootzenbest, Fall Camporees, Summer Camp, Open Shoots, Merit Badges, RATA Program, Cowboy Actions, etc.
  • If for any reason you do not help, you agree to pay back all (0 days help) or half (1 day help) of the training discounts.
  • Scouting Participants who have to drive >100 miles and anyone in the Majestic Mesas or Three Rivers District get a total of 75% off of their registration.
     

Please remember NRA Instructor Courses are performance based courses, Instructor Candidates must possess the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for this level of training. You do not pay and automatically pass Instructor training. You pay to have the opportunity to pass.
