USS Hornet

Winter Camp Awareness (WCA) is an exciting annual informational training session offered on the USS Hornet in Alameda. It is hosted and taught by members of the Order of the Arrow (OA), giving OA members the opportunity to step up as leaders, and teach others. WCA provides a unique, hands-on leadership experience that helps staff develop valuable communication and public speaking skills while gaining experience leading and working with others.

The main goal of this event is to teach scouts and scouters how to camp safely in cold and frigid conditions while having as much fun as possible. 

There will be 7 topics, meaning we need volunteers to present. Each Chapter will run one of the stations and require a few presenters to present, aid, and teach the troops! Additionally, we need Troop Guides. Troop Guides will lead the troops through the Hornet on designated routes so units won’t get lost. The registration crew will handle unit and staff registration. The Cooking Crew will help prepare and serve the pre-ordered lunches to participants. 

This food will be free to WCA staff. Additionally, the price for this event is heavily reduced for staff! After the event, all staff have the chance to stay and tour the historic USS Hornet! 

Check-in for staff will begin at 7:00 AM, December 5th. Breakfast will be served from 7:00-7:30 AM followed by a mandatory safety briefing. The program starts at 9:00 AM and is expected to finish at approximately 4:30 PM. At 11:30 AM there will be a 40-minute lunch period. Please wear closed-toed shoes and warm clothing, as the ship gets quite cold, and bring a water bottle. Lunch will be provided.
