Northern New Jersey Council - Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food

Event Details

Each day, families in our area struggle to put food on the table.  Parents skip meals so their children can eat; seniors must choose between buying groceries or the medication they need; children go to bed hungry. We need your help to assist these families in our communities. Now, more than ever, the pantries are struggling to provide food to those who need it. We are asking every Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship in our District to participate in this year’s Scouting for Food Service Project.

Scouting for Food is Boy Scouts America’s annual food drive. As a District, we coordinate this large effort, however, your Unit may choose to participate more often. Through a generous donation from Shop Rite (the Wakefern Corporation), printed plastic supermarket bags are available for each Unit. Bags and instruction sheets are available now from the Northern New Jersey Council Service Center. Each Scout should visit at least 10 homes in their community and distribute bags to their neighbors on or about February 25th. The Scout should then return before or on March 11th to collect the food bags. Scouts should be in uniform. Recommended food items are printed on the bag, along with instructions for the recipient. HOWEVER, the list of desired food items has changed, please take note. Food pantry shelves are critically low now.  Please help us assist those in need.

All bags must be picked up on Saturday, March 11th after 10:00am. Collected items may be delivered between 10:30am-4pm to our new drop off location, 70 Demarest Dr, Wayne. This year, we have decided to continue to partner with our beneficiary from last year! CUMAC, located in Paterson, will remain our beneficiary for Scouting for Food 2023. You can learn more about their mission on their website www.cumac.org. CUMAC has also been on the receiving end of a multitude of Eagle Scout service projects (and is always looking for more!) CUMAC will pick up the food and distribute it to families in need in our area. All Units are welcome to stay and help sort and repack food at the warehouse that day. Please arrive at 10:00am or earlier to attend an important meeting held at 10:00am.

This event requires many medium sized boxes to be successful. Boxes that are greater than 2ft in each dimension are also welcome and will be put to good use.

If you have any questions, email Dominic Dell Antonia, dominic@dellantonia.com. If you need immediate response, you can call/text Dom at 973-995-7070.
