Scouting America (Calcasieu Area), in partnership with Army MWR, is excited to host a Climbing, BB Gun and Slingshot Shoot as part of Forge Week at Fort Polk, offering local youth a unique opportunity to experience Climbing and shooting sports in a fun, structured, and highly supervised setting.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 13 at 5:00 PM (1700 hours) at the MWR Recreational Shooting Range 23A aboard Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Youth in grades 1 through 12—boys and girls alike—are invited to participate, and no prior Scouting experience or membership is required, making this an accessible and welcoming event for the entire community.

Participants will have the chance to learn the fundamentals of climbing, BB gun and slingshot shooting, including safety, proper technique, and target practice, all under the direct supervision of Scouting America–certified COPE/Climbing and Rangemasters who ensure a safe and supportive environment at every step. All necessary equipment, including Climbing Tower, BB guns, Slingshots, and Safety Gear, will be provided through Camp Edgewood, allowing youth to simply show up ready to learn and have fun. Beyond the excitement of hitting targets and trying something new, the event is designed to introduce families to local Scouting opportunities and encourage youth development through hands-on activities that build confidence, focus, and discipline.

To add to the excitement, participants will have the chance to compete within their age groups, with top performers from each bracket earning recognition at Forge Fest on September 19. Whether your child is curious about climbing or shooting sports, interested in joining Scouting, or just looking for an engaging outdoor activity during Forge Week, this event promises an evening of learning, friendly competition, and memorable experiences in a safe and encouraging environment.
