Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)
Who should Attend
IOLS is the required outdoor training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches and Assistant Varsity Coaches, and Venturing Advisors and Associate Venturing Advisors (Crews with Outdoor program, effective 1 Jan 2010). The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook and focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.
What to Bring
Your BSA ID number, proof of Youth Protection training, Tent, Flashlight, Scout Uniform, Rain Gear, note taking items, sleeping bag/bedroll, personal toiletries, compass, Day-pack/book bag, Unit specific leaders handbook, Scout handbook, pocket knife, Camp Chair (optional) and Current BSA Health Form: parts A & B including photocopy of insurance card.
Location
Classroom location is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Glenkirk Road in Gainesville.
The Weekend session will be held at Camp Snyder near Haymarket, Virginia from Friday evening (October 16th) to Sunday morning (10 am, Oct 18th).
Attendance
Attendees must attend the Tuesday classroom session, and the full weekend session starting on Friday 6 pm through to noon on Sunday, and will eat and work as patrols. Attendees need to arrive on Friday as close to 6 pm as possible (no dinner provided on Friday) and cooking meals at the campsite is part of the training program. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory to receive credit for the course.
Attendees will be assigned into patrols for the weekend at the Tuesday classroom session, and several requirements will be completed in advance of the weekend.
A minimum of eight participants is required for the course to run.
