Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) Course Description

Adults work together as patrols.  This hands-on course provides adult leaders with practical outdoors skills for leading and teaching Scouts in the out-of-doors and teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain First Class rank. Must attend overnight to complete course.

Who should attend:

  • Scoutmasters/Assistant Scoutmaster (required)
  • Adult volunteers interested in learning more about the Scouts BSA program of Scouting America

PRE-REQUISITES

(must be completed BEFORE the course is taken)

  • Registered Adult; Required for IOLS
  • Current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT - Formerly known as Youth Protection Training (YPT))
  • Present a completed "Annual Medical & Health Record" - Parts A & B medical form to check-in.
  • IOLS Weather Hazards Training (My.Scouting.org)
  • IOLS - Watch Learn Leave No Trace Video (https://learn.lnt.org/); preferred, but not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I required to camp overnight?
    • Yes! For both IOLS you are required to stay overnight to accomplish the full training. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about meeting this requirement.
  • What should I bring?
    • Please review the "What to Bring to IOLS" attachment on the event page to review some helpful things to bring.
  • What's the alternative date of the training if it is cancelled due to bad weather?
    • No alternative date at this time.
  • Where are we staying and what amenities are available?
    • https://www.troop412.hk/events/campsites/gilwell
    • Venue includes showers (hot water), toilets, boiled and drinking water, fridge, freezer, parking, and much more. 
  • Participant & Camping Staff (adults only) Fees include 
    • Overnight and day-camp camping fees
    • All program materials
    • Meals: Dinner, Cracker Barrel, Breakfast and Trail Lunch
  • Things it does not include
    • Transportation to and from the venue (the campsite is in a remote area and has parking. Carpooling is encouraged.)
    • Your tent, sleeping bag, camping gear, etc. 
    • Your personal items like clothes, toiletries, etc.
