2021 ALL-JAPAN VIRTUAL PINEWOOD DERBY
We are thrilled to announce the 2021 All-Japan Pinewood Derby, which will take place on Saturday, April 17, from 09:00 to 12:00. Each pack in Asia East and Asia Central is invited--from Misawa to Okinawa!

Who can race?
All cars and all ages are welcome, including siblings, parents, and friends. We will have a total of 11 categories of competition:

  1. Lion
  2. Tiger
  3. Wolf
  4. Bear
  5. Webelos I
  6. Webelos II/AOL
  7. Cub-age siblings and friends
  8. Scouts BSA-age siblings and friends
  9. Adults
  10. Open/outlaw/no rules
  11. Design (Everyone will automatically be entered into the design category.)

How can I watch?
This event will be broadcast on YouTube (link to be distributed later via email and Facebook). Because it will be broadcast in the morning, relatives in the western hemisphere will be able to watch the broadcast. We hope this will be a fun event for families all over the world!

How do I register?
Early registration (currently open!) (until Sunday, April 10): $5
Late registration (until Sunday, April 17): $6

How do I submit cars?
Each Pack will be responsible for collecting and mailing or delivering the pinewood derby cars to the event director, Brett Gilbert (Pack5Tokyo@gmail.com). After your online registration is complete, we will contact you and provide an address (MPS or Japan Post) where you can send cars. You can also coordinate directly with Brett Gilbert (Pack5Tokyo@gmail.com) to arrange for direct dropoff in Tokyo.

If you plan to use MPS, please send your cars ASAP. We don't want any cars to arrive late! Please consider sending via Japan Post for the most reliable delivery.

When sending the cars, please include some extra space in your packaging, so we can return patches and awards to you. Of course, please fill this empty space with cushioning to keep the cars safe.

There is no limit to the number of cars that a Pack may enter. Indeed, the more the merrier! It is not necessary for a car to have done well at a Pack race before being entered in this District event. Indeed, this may be the first time a car has raced at all. Scouts who were members of an Arrow of Light den in the Spring of 2020 may enter in the Webelos II/AOL category. These scouts should coordinate with their former Packs.

How will the cars be returned?
After the race is over, the cars will be returned in the same manner in which they were sent to us (MPS/JP/direct dropoff). Cars returned via Japan Post will be mailed C.O.D. (meaning the person who receives the box will pay for the return shipment at the time of delivery).

How do I prepare the cars?
Each car should have the following information written on the bottom:

  • Participant name
  • Unit number
  • Car name
  • Racing division (see below)

Awards
First, second, and third place awards will be presented to the winning cars in each division. Additionally, another set of first, second, and third place awards will be presented for design and for the overall top three finishers among all Cub Scout entrants (categories 1-6).

Race-day Logistics
Race organizers cannot guarantee that they will have time to repair damaged or non-compliant cars, although they will do their very best! Please ensure that each car is compliant with race rules. Please do your best to ensure that cars are delivered in working order. Any cars that do not meet the derby specifications can still race, but they will be placed in the Outlaw division.

Lastly . . .
We are so excited to be able to offer this event! We think it will be a huge highlight in each participant's scouting year. We are grateful for all you are doing for the youth, and it is our great pleasure and honor to work alongside you. If there is anything at all you need as we get closer to the event, please don't hesitate to let us know!
