2026 Shanghai BALOO Training

BALOO course description

Adults work together as Dens.  This hands-on course provides adult leaders with practical outdoor skills for leading and teaching Cub Scouts in the out-of-doors.  BALOO training is required for any Cub Scout Leader or registered parent volunteer to conduct Webelos/AOL, Den or Pack outdoor events, camping overnighters.  Both the on-line and practical hands-on components must be completed ot qualify as a "Trained" Cub Scout outdoor leader.   Must attend overnight to complete course.

Who should attend:

  • Cub Scout Leaders
  • Parents or Legal Guardians of Cub Scouts
  • Adult Leaders interested in learning more about Cub Scouts
  • A BALOO-trained registered volunteer is required to be on-site for all Packs during outdoor events and/or overnight campouts with Dens or Packs.

IOLS course description

Adults work together as patrols.  This hands-on course provides adult leaders with practical outdoors skills for leading and teaching Scouts in the out-of-doors and teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain First Class rank. Must attend overnight to complete course.

Who should attend:

  • Scoutmasters/Assistant Scoutmaster (required)
  • Adult volunteers interested in learning more about Scouts BSA

PRE-REQUISITES

(must be completed BEFORE the course is taken)

  • Registered Adult; preferred, but not required for BALOO. Required for IOLS
  • Current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT - Formerly known as Youth Protection Training (YPT))
  • Present a completed "Annual Medical & Health Record" - Parts A & B medical form to check-in.
  • BALOO & IOLS Weather Hazards Training (My.Scouting.org)
  • BALOO - BALOO Introduction (My.Scouting.org)
  • IOLS - Watch Learn Leave No Trace Video (https://learn.lnt.org/); preferred, but not required

 

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I required to camp overnight?
    • Yes! For both IOLS and BALOO you are required to stay overnight to accomplish the full training. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about meeting this requirement.
  • What should I bring?
    • Please review the "What to Bring to IOLS" attachment on the event page to review some helpful things to bring.
  • What is the cost of this training?
    • The estimated cost of RMB550 for IOLS will be collected locally. In efforts to keep the fees down to the lowest possible costs, this may vary or change, so please reach out to the Instructor listed in the Event Contact field for more details.
