The Vanguard Scouts’ Challenge: Roaring Twenties & Vigilant Thirties 

This Scout Camporee invites participants to step into the world of young people growing up between the end of the First World War and the dawn of the Second—not through elaborate reenactments, but through hands-on challenges, teamwork, and immersive historical storytelling. The program explores the lived experience of youths in the Roaring Twenties and Vigilant Thirties, a generation shaped by peace, prosperity, hardship, and rising global tension.

During these decades, nations across Europe and beyond were rebuilding from the devastation of the Great War. The 1920s brought rapid social change, technological innovation, and newfound optimism: radios crackled to life, aviation leapt forward, and modern culture flourished. Yet beneath the excitement lay a growing awareness that peace was fragile. By the 1930s, economic hardship, political unrest, and international uncertainty pushed many countries to strengthen their youth programs, encouraging discipline, physical fitness, and civic responsibility.

Throughout the weekend, Scouts will explore these themes through accessible, engaging experiences. Patrol challenges will draw inspiration from early 20th-century youth training: assault courses that test agility and cooperation, marksmanship-style activities that emphasise focus and safety, and team tasks that echo the discipline and camaraderie valued during the Peace Years. Scouts will also encounter the cultural energy of the Roaring Twenties and the sober determination of the Vigilant Thirties, gaining insight into how young people navigated a world moving rapidly toward modernity while bracing for an uncertain future.
We hope that during the Mayflower District Fall Camporee 2026, Scouts will gain a deeper appreciation for how the Roaring Twenties and Vigilant Thirties shaped a generation, and how young people prepared themselves for whatever lay ahead.

The Fall Camporee will be held at Lees Wood Scout & Guide Activity Centre. The address of the scout camp is:

Units should plan on arriving between 18h00 and 22h00 on Friday, 2nd October 2026 and departing after the closing on Sunday, about 10h30. Preferably do not arrive early Friday evening, as the Camporee Staff may not be ready.

Arrow of Light Scouts may participate at a Scouts BSA “camporee” (council coordinated, short-term camp, see NCAP SA-001) during the day and/or overnight in one of two ways:
i. With their Arrow of Light Den/Patrol. Arrow of Light Scouts can attend as an Arrow of Light den/patrol under the supervision of two deep leadership from their Arrow of Light den/patrol or pack. The Arrow of Light Scout’s parent or legal guardian(s) may attend with the Arrow of Light den/patrol and their child, either alongside the two-deep leadership or as part of it if they are registered with the pack.
ii. As an Individual Scout. Arrow of Light Scouts can attend with their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) if the local council coordinates two deep leadership per NCAP Standard HS-502.

As such we extend out invite for your packs to attend the event, as separate unit to the Scouts BSA troop. If there is interest in this please do contact the Camporee Chair, Frank Sotrines. 

BALOO and IOLS Courses Available

A trained leader is a better leader. The Camporee runs concurrently with an Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) for Scouts BSA leaders. It will also offer a Cub Scout BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) course. Registration and attendance at IOLS and the BALOO courses are considered separate events. Troops should be sure to plan two-deep leadership, male and female as required, without relying on any adults that are attending IOLS or the BALOO. Order of the Arrow

During the Camporee, there will be a Namassakett Chapter weekend for member of the Order of the Arrow to complete their Ordeal or Brotherhood walks. Information will be provided in a separate registration link.

Registration

Registration before 27th September is essential to assist us in planning and to ensure that your unit can participate. The cost for the weekend will be $40 per scout and $35 per adult. This might have additional cost depending on the part of the event each participant is taking part in. This will be covered in section 3 in this guide.

Parent Portal Available:
We have enabled the use of Parent Portal.  This allows the initial Registration Contact to provide unit parents with access to only their Scout's part of the registration, to make payments and complete data entry. 

Here is how it works for the Registration Contact:
1.  From the 'Additional Actions' dropdown menu select 'Parent Portal'.  Additional instructions are located inside the application.  
2.  Select 'Use Parent Portal' via the checkbox.
3.  After checkout return to this feature and select 'Parent Portal Credentials' to print parent login credentials.
4.  Give parents one login credential for each of their participants (including themselves if they are one of the participants).
5.  Parents can then use these credentials to make payments and update data entry fields such as name, rank, dietary requirements, etc.
