BACKGROUND
        BSA allows only NRA Certified Instructors and RSOs to conduct and supervise BSA rifle, shotgun, and pistol shooting activities; serve as a Rifle and Shotgun Merit Badge Counselor; and teach NRA Basic Rifle. Shotgun, and Pistol courses.
        Minimum requirements for Instructor Candidates include being at least 21 years of age by the end of instruction, attend all sessions for the intended certification(s), actively participate in classroom activities and practical applications, and achieve a passing score on each course
exam. NRA Certification involves Candidates being assessed upon their knowledge, skills, and attitude.

        NRA Instructor Certification courses are not beginner courses. It is highly encouraged that Instructor Candidates have a working
knowledge of firearms and be proficient shooters.

COURSEWORK
         Scouters holding current NRA Instructor or RSO certifications may attend individual Instructor courses for rifle, shotgun, pistol, or RSO courses to add to their certifications. Other youth organizations and businesses also recognize NRA Instructors and RSOs for their
shooting programs.
         The 8-day course schedule includes the pre-requisite NRA Basic courses for Rifle, Shotgun, and Pistol for individuals to be eligible to attend the Instructor courses. Except for previously certified Instructors and RSOs who have active credentials, attendance and completion of all courses are required for Instructor Candidates. Instructor & RSO Certifications will be awarded by the NRA following satisfactory course completion.
         Printed Student materials will be provided at the start of each course; however, attendees are advised to bring a lap-top computer, because much of the course material is now available in digital format. Please contact the Lead Instructor to request information or address questions.

COURSE REGISTRATION & TUITION
         Registration and payment are simultaneously completed online with the Gulf Coast Council at https://scoutingevent.com/773-NRA25 . Registration must be completed prior to 1 Oct 2026.

         Course seating is filled in the order registration is received. Once seating capacity is reached, attendees will be placed on a standby list. No one will lose their money. Anyone that registers and pays the course fee and then is unable to attend, their payment will be refunded. Those onthe standby list will move up. Once registered, you will receive additional detailed course information from the Lead Instructor. Contact him with questions or for additional information.
         Following online registration with GCC, SEND AN EMAIL that includes all the information listed above to the Lead Instructor. Failure to send this information will delay your final course registration and seating assignments.
         The Total Course Fee for all 4 certifications is $200, which represents a significant discount for the 8 total courses. The GCC NRA Instructors are unpaid Scouting volunteers and present these courses as a benefit to our Scouting volunteers.

SAFETY
         Course attendees are prohibited from carrying or bringing any firearms or ammunition to the Spanish Trail Scout Reservation classrooms, facilities, and ranges. Personal firearms must remain secured in a locked vehicle at all times aboard Spanish Trail Scout Reservation. Failure to observe this policy will result in immediate disenrollment from the course and forfeiture of all tuition.

NRA FEES
         NRA Instructor Certification fees are payable directly to the NRA by each student upon course completion. First time Instructor Certification fee is currently $40 for a 2-year certification for NRA members and $175 for a 2-year Certification for Non-Members.
