BALOO Training

September 18-20, 2026

Take Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orienation (BALOO) training during the weekend of September 18-20 at Camp Fawcett. This is a wonderful opportunity to become a trained Cub Scout leader. 

BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. It is a training course for adult leaders and parents. At least one BALOO-trained adult must be present on any Cub Scout pack or Webelos den overnight camping trip.

What is BALOO Training?

• The course introduces adults to the Cub Scout outdoor program. It combines online learning with practical experience:
  • Online Prerequisite: A short introductory course completed on My.Scouting.
  • Hands-on Practical Component: A 1.5-day in-person course (including an overnight stay) taught at the council event. 

Why Do We Need It?

• Safety and Compliance: The BSA Guide to Safe Scouting requires at least one BALOO-trained adult on site to ensure all national health, risk management, and safety rules are followed.
• Skill Building: It teaches adults how to select campsites, pitch tents safely, and handle outdoor cooking.
• Program Planning: Leaders learn how to run campfires, plan hikes, and organize age-appropriate outdoor games.
• Confidence: It gives inexperienced parents and leaders the tools and reassurance they need to lead fun outdoor events.

Log into my.scouting.org and take the BALOO Prerequisite Training and bring your training certificate to camp as well as your AB Medical Form. 

Participants should arrive by 7:30 PM on Friday evening. Meals will be provided on Saturday, as well as breakfast on Sunday. A packing list is available to the right.
