Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Course

The Leave No Trace Leavel 1 Instructor Course is a 16-hour hands-on course to equip you to teach the Leave No Trace principles by conducting Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops. The course is for adults and older youth who are committed to responsible use of our outdoor resources and
want to share that passion with others.
The first part of the course will be classroom training, where you’ll learn about the history and background of Leave No Trace, explore various aspects of Outdoor Ethics and responsible stewardship, and learn about teaching methods and resources. The remainder of the course will be an overnight backcountry experience, where you will continue to explore the seven principles in depth, and will have a chance to practice your skills by teaching one of the principles within a small group.
The backcountry experience will involve a short out-and-back backpacking trip of about 2.5 miles each way with approx. 750 feet of elevation gain. We’ll take our time and make plenty of stops along the way, but participants should be in good physical condition to make the trip. BSA
members, please bring a copy of your Annual Health and Medical Record (parts A and B).
In addition, we’ll discuss the BSA Outdoor Ethics program and awards, and give you some resources for teaching Outdoor Ethics within the BSA. Non-BSA members are welcome as participants.
Registered BSA members must be at least 14 years of age. Participants under age 18 must have parent or guardian permission. Non-BSA members must be at least 18 years of age.
Each participant will need to prepare a 10-15 minute session on any one of the Leave No Trace principles. Prepare your presentation in advance and bring everything you need (posters, props, etc.). You can find lots of ideas and resources on the web. The presentations will be made in small groups in the backcountry, so no electricity or other technology will be available. Think “low tech”.
The participant fee of $45 covers:
- Course materials
- Breakfast and lunch on Saturday
- Sunday lunch will be on your own at a local restaurant
Each participant will need to bring:
- A backpack, sleeping bag, and tent for the backcountry portion.
