What Is a Short-Term Camp?

A short-term camp is any district- or council-organized overnight camping program—whether a one-time or ongoing event—that is one, two, or three nights in length. In these programs, the council or its agents provide staffing and may also provide program and food services. Short-term camps may take place on or off council properties.

Overnight national training courses are also subject to short-term camp requirements, regardless of their format or duration.

Short-Term Camp Administrator

  • Every short-term camp must be overseen by a Short-Term Camp Administrator. This National Camping School (NCS) course may be conducted at the council level with host site approval.
  • Certification is valid for 2 years from the course date.

Short-Term Camp Administrator Position Description

  • The Short-Term Camp Administrator is responsible for ensuring that each planned camp complies with the NCAP Short-Term Camp Standards. Responsibilities include:
  • Walking and evaluating the property to ensure it is safe and appropriate for the event.
  • Ensuring all required paperwork and written Scouting America approvals are properly completed and submitted through the council.
  • Confirming that facilities and program areas are safe, functional, and ready for use before the camp begins.
  • Ensuring appropriate health, safety, and sanitation measures are in place.
  • Verifying that all activities comply with applicable National Camp Standards.

Pre-Qualifications

  • Be a registered Scouter

Qualifications to serve in the role

To serve in the role as a Short-Term Camp Administrator for any camporee, OA event, or other short-term camp, an individual must:

  • Be a registered Scouter, and

Hold either:

  • A current National Camping School Short-Term Camp Administrator certification issued by Scouting America, or
  • A valid Resident Camp Director certificate from National Camping School.
  • Refer to NCAP Standard SQ-403 for full requirements.
