Aquatic School: An Unparalleled Leadership and Aquatic Training Program
Since its inception in 1954, Aquatic School has been the Longhorn Council's premier week-long program dedicated to cultivating leadership and advanced aquatic skills among Scouts.
Program Overview:
Who can attend: Scouts aged 13-17 seeking to enhance their leadership capabilities and aquatic proficiency.
Tradition: For over seventy years, Aquatic School has consistently served as the foundational training ground for the Longhorn Council's most skilled instructors and leaders.
Merit Badges: The program offers Scouts the opportunity to complete the following Merit Badges.
- Swimming
- Lifesaving
- Rowing
- Canoeing
- Kayaking
- Public Speaking (all but 1 requirement)
Additional Opportunities: depending on abilities and performance, Scouts will have the opportunity to complete or make progress toward the following:
- Mile Swim
- National Outdoor Achievement Award - Aquatics Segment
- Safe Swim Defense Training Cert
- Safety Afloat Training Cert
- Paddlecraft Safety Certification (ages 15+)
- Swimming and Water Rescue Certification (ages 15+)
American Red Cross Lifeguard: Scouts that are 15+ will be able to earn a Lifeguard Certification.
- Requires additional registration and fee through the American Red Cross.
- Requires pre-requisite hybrid learning module to be complete BEFORE Aquatic School.
- Requires additional ARC CPR/First Aid Certification (can be completed before or after Aquatic School)
Four Goals of Aquatic Shool:
Aquatic School is structured around four primary goals designed to foster holistic development:
- Leadership Development: Participants will engage in activities that enhance their decision-making, teamwork, and overall ability to lead.
- Skill Proficiency: Emphasis is placed on achieving a high level of mastery in all aquatic skills taught.
- Instructor Training: Beyond personal skill acquisition, the program equips Scouts with teaching skills and strategies necessary to effectively instruct others.
- Time Management: Participants will refine their organizational and prioritization skills, essential for academic and professional success…beyond their Scouting career.

Pre-requisite:
All participants must pass the Scouting America swimmer's test the day they arrive at Aquatic School or they will not be allowed to stay as being a swimmer is the baseline for the rest of the program and does not include a ‘learn to swim’ phase.
