Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor course

Event Details

The Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor course is a 16-hour advanced course on the principles of Leave No Trace and provides practical outdoor guidelines for minimizing impacts in both front country and backcountry venues.

Recommended for Unit Leadership, including Outdoor Ethics Guides (youth & adult advisers), OA Leadership (youth and adults), Training Staff (Wood Badge, NYLT, Powder Horn, IOLS and BALOO), Den Chiefs, Camp Staff.

Participants must attend both the Virtual and Field Sessions.

Virtual Session:

Sunday, April 7, 2024             2:00-5:00 PM

Field Session (overnight camping required):

Saturday, April 20, 2024        8:00 AM to

Sunday, April 21, 2024           Noon

Cost: $35.00 (food & instruction materials)

The Virtual Session (Zoom) will cover introductory Leave No Trace presentations for the course. Participants will be assigned a Leave No Trace topic that they will plan and teach during the Field Session.  A portion of the session will be used in preparing participants for the Field Session.

The Field Session will include additional Leave No Trace sessions as well as participant teaching presentations.

Meals (we’ll discuss dietary restrictions, as needed):

Saturday breakfast - eat before you arrive.

Saturday lunch - bring a sack lunch

Saturday Dinner – provided

Sunday breakfast – provided, but participants will plan, cook and clean-up using Leave No Trace principles.

Camping will be available Friday night, if needed, but you will be on your own for food and we must be able to accommodate YPT.

Participant Requirements: 

Must have a current BSA membership.

Must have current YPT and Hazardous Weather completion.

Participants much be 18 and up

BSA Medical Form A & B

Must have enough camping knowledge to be able to camp comfortably overnight.

Complete a 10 minutes presentation/activity during the Field session (assigned during the Virtual Session).

Arrive at the Archery Range on April 20 at 8:00 AM for check-in and setup, having already eaten breakfast.

Bring a sack lunch & snack.

Camping gear, mess kit, water bottle, comfortable Scout appropriate clothing. A detail gear list will be provided in the Virtual Session.

Graduates will receive a Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructors Packet and Level 1 Instructor Recognition.

Graduates will be recognized as Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor with training skills for both generic and Scouting audiences and walk away with an enriched understanding of Leave No Trace Seven Principles and practices, expanded repertoire of low-impact skills, and increased effectiveness in teaching these important concepts to others.
