BALOO – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
This 1.5-day course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. It is required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and Webelos den overnighters.
BALOO training is comprised of two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. The online component must be completed prior to the practical outdoor and classroom component. The online training contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the practical training.
To take the online component, go to My.Scouting.org.
At least one adult on every pack overnighter must have BALOO certification (except at District and Council events). Camp Rangers cannot allow a Pack to camp without a BALOO certified leader onsite.
IOLS – Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Outdoor skills taught include knife and ax handling, cooking, pioneering, patrol method and more.
Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank.
Scoutmasters and assistants who complete this training, along with Scoutmaster Specific Training and Youth Protection training are considered “trained.”
