SLOO Training 2022

Event Details

Attention Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Members, Webelos Leaders, Cub Scout Leaders, and other interested Scout Leaders

The Great Rivers Council invites you to participate in Scout Leader Outdoor Orientation (SLOO); a fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you master basic camp skills required from Cub Scouts to the rank of First Class in Scouts BSA. The program will start at 8:00 AM Saturday and finish by 5:00 PM Saturday. Doors open at 7:30 AM for check-in.

Please complete and bring a BSA Pre-Event Medical Screening Checklist or complete one at check-in.

This training satisfies the requirements of B.A.L.O.O. Training, Webelos Leader Training, and Outdoor Leader Skills.

Instructors will provide information regarding campout planning, camp set up, cooking, wood tools, ropes and knots, first aid, campfire programs, map and compass skills, hiking and backpacking, nature identification, and Leave No Trace principles. Participants will be treated to a fantastic lunch prepared by our staff quartermasters.

Each outdoor session will bring to life the pages of the Webelos and Scouts BSA Handbooks to help you deliver the promise of Scouting to the youth you serve. Along with a campout planning checklist, examples of necessary camping and outdoor equipment will be demonstrated. This program will increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader. The program will also give you the opportunity to work with other Scout leaders from your area, meet new friends, and reinforce skills and techniques with fellow unit leaders.

The attached “What to Bring” checklist covers the personal gear you will need to bring for training. A Scout uniform should be worn if possible. Missouri weather can be unpredictable, so watch the forecast and be prepared.

If you have any physical limitations, dietary restrictions, or medical needs, please let us know so that the course leaders can plan accordingly.

Please make arrangements to attend the entire course from 8 AM Saturday to 5 PM Saturday. We will have a FULL SCHEDULE, and you won’t want to miss any of the activities or the fun.
