Linn Merit Badge College 2023
Join us July 22nd for our annual Linn Merit Badge College, put on by Troop 17 on the campus of the State Technical College of Missouri! Here you will find all the information you need regarding the merit badge course catalog, pre-requisites, & camping options. Please review the information below:
Registration deadline is July 10 at 11:59pm
COST: The Scout cost is $25 (includes lunch, patch, merit badge completion sheet, and materials needed for the class). There is no cost for adult to attend. Adults may purchase an optional lunch for $10.
SCHEDULE:
- Troop Check-in: 8:00 a.m.
- Opening Ceremony: 8:30 a.m.
- Classes Begin: 9:00 a.m.
- Classes End and Dismissal: 3:30 p.m.
CAMPING: Linn Lions Club Fairgrounds, located across Highway 50 from State Technical College of Missouri, will be available if you want to camp on Friday and/or Saturday night at no charge. There is water and restroom facilities available. You will be given an option to sign up to camp when you register online. Please be considerate of other troops when camping and follow the principles of Leave No Trace.
WHAT TO BRING: All Scouts are expected to bring merit badge booklet and workbook, pencil, paper, any supplemental resources to aide them in completing the merit badge to class and any completed prerequisite requirements. Booklets and workbooks will not be provided. Workbooks are available at http://usscouts.org/mb/worksheets/list.asp
DRESS CODE: All Scouts are required to be in their Field (Class A) Uniform during the entirety of the event unless otherwise stated in the prerequisites and they must conduct themselves by the Scout Oath and Scout Law at all times.

Merit Badge Catalog & Prerequisites:
We are excited to partner with State Technical College of Missouri and our community volunteer’s again this year to bring you the following merit badge classes. The classes will be limited in size and filled on a first come, first serve basis.
NOTE: *Indicates a half-day class. Scouts taking half-day courses must take a morning AND an afternoon half-day class.
**Indicates three classes in one. It is taken as one collective group and each merit badge will be tied together and all three earned that day.

Merit Badge Prerequisites
Scouts enrolled in the following merit badges must complete the prerequisites before the day of the event and bring proof of completion to the class (i.e. the actual work which was completed or prerequisites completed in the actual workbook and brought with them).
American Cultures: Requirement 1.
Animal Science: Class will visit a farm; need 2-3 adult drivers to transport Scouts to and from farm.
Archery: None.
Architecture: Requirements 1a; 1b; 5.
Animation: None
Automotive Maintenance (added on 4/25): Must be 15 years old or older. Requirement 11A; bring a workbook to fill out legibly in class.
Aviation: Must have signed Guide to Safe Scouting Activity "Consent and Approval by Parents or Legal Guardian" to fly (Aviation Flight Consent Form); e-mail signed copy of signed form to jdbackes@socket.net.
Chemistry: None.
Chess: None.
Citizenship in Society:
- 1. You must know what the word means. Use a dictionary. Be able to explain what part of the Scout Law the word relates to.
- 2 & 3. For the purposes of this merit badge, we have the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto to help an ethical decision. Keep this in mind when researching these requirements.
- 4. Many of you have encountered one of these scenarios in real life. You do not need to tell exactly what you did, but what you could do. If you would like to share what you did, you may.
- 5. Every unit is different and that is ok. This requirement is focusing on what YOU have done and can do to make scouting a wonderful experience for everyone.
- 6. This must be done with parent/guardian help. The person must have have a different identity from yours. This could include a trait, belief, characteristic, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.
- 7. Make sure you do your research and go with a historical figure. r!
- 8. See #7.
- 9. You all have extracurricular activities outside of Scouting. Think of activities at school, church, part-time jobs, etc.
- 10. From Oxford Dictionary, a stereotype is a widely-held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. A stereotype is always based on something true but is extended out to the rest of the group where is isn't true. We will not use derogatory terms when this requirement is discussed, but we will have an honest and frank discussion.
- 11. Use the term "groupthink" as a search term for 11c. There are a ton of examples that you can come up with, with a basic search for 11d.
Citizenship in the Community: Requirements 3a & 3b; 4a & 4b; 7a, 7b, & 7c; 8 (develop a public presentation (video, slide show, speech, digital presentation, or photo exhibit) about important and unique aspects of your community and bring to class). Scouts will watch a movie in class for Requirement 5.
Citizenship in the Nation: Requirements 5, 7a, 7b, 7c or 7d (do any TWO), 8 (send & bring copy); need 1-2 adult leaders to help - please make sure to look at most updated Citizenship in the Nation requirements (updated May 2022).
Citizenship in the World: None
Collections: Requirements 1, 5 (either bring your collection, a photograph of your collection or e-mail a photograph in advance to amanda@inspiredbyheritage.com), and 7.
Communication: 1st Class Rank; Requirements 3, 4, 5 and 8.
Cooking: In this class, Scouts will acquire the tools to successfully plan and execute meals to be cooked at home, on Troop campouts and on a backpacking trip or hike. They will learn kitchen and food safety, review basic first aid for kitchen mishaps, learn how to successfully accommodate diners with food allergies, learn basic nutritional concepts and healthy eating habits, learn about cooking methods, and learn about outdoor ethics as applied to camp cooking. This knowledge provides the necessary foundation for the meal and menu planning called for in the 3 cooking requirements. The class will include a demonstration of Dutch oven cooking and a dessert. - Prerequisite: #7 Food-related careers. Find out about three career opportunities in cooking. Select one and find out the education, training and experience required for this profession. Be prepared to discuss in class what you’ve learned.
- Requirements to be completed in class: 1(a-e), 2 (a-e), 3 (a-c), 7.
- Requirements to be completed at home and on Troop outings: 4, 5, 6. (Scouts will receive a partial blue card.)

Crime Prevention/Fingerprinting/Traffic Safety Trio:
- Crime Prevention: Requirements 2, 4a, 4b (Home Security Checklist); 6a, b or c (Do ONE)
- Fingerprinting: None
- Traffic Safety: None
Disabilities Awareness: None.
Dog Care: Requirement 4; class will visit veterinary clinic; will need 2 adult drivers; DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN DOG.
Drafting: Pre-requisites will be released soon
Emergency Preparedness: Requirements 1 (bring proof of having completed the First Aid Merit Badge); 2b & 2c (do a family plan, discuss & bring copy of plan to MBU); 6c (find out and bring names of your community's Emergency Management Director, Sheriff or Chief of Police, Fire Chief and EMD Director; 8b (bring your personal emergency pack for a mobilization call; prepare and bring a family kit (suitcase or waterproof box); you can bring a picture that shows what is in them); 9a (Home Safety Checklist).
Engineering: None.
Fire Safety: 9a (Home Safety Checklist), 11
First Aid: Requirement 1: Have current knowledge of all first-aid requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First-Class ranks; 5a (bring First Aid kit to class); 5b (with an adult leader, inspect your troop’s first-aid kit. Evaluate it for completeness; bring results with you to class).
Genealogy: Requirement 3 and 6.
Geology: None.
Golf: At least 13 years old and general knowledge of how to play golf. Scouts will need to meet at the Golf Course promptly at 7:45 am. Will need to be picked up at the Golf Course at 3:30 pm.
Health Care Professions: Requirement 9
Home Repairs: Wear Field (Class A) Uniform to opening ceremony; bring old clothes to change into for class. No shorts or open toed shoes will be allowed.
Inventing: None
Metalwork: Wear Field (Class A) Uniform to opening ceremony; bring jeans and enclosed shoes to change into for class; no shorts or open toed shoes will be allowed; need 3 adult leaders.
Mining in Society: None.
Nucelar Science: None
Personal Fitness: Requirement 1a (have your health-care provider give you a physical examination, using the current Scouts BSA Medical Form which should be done before completing requirements 2 through 9); 1b (bring letter or statement from dentist to class); 6a, 6b; 7 and 8; if 6a & 6b, 7 & 8 are not completed before the MBU, the Scout will need to finish merit badge after MBU; wear Class A Field Uniform to opening ceremony; bring gym clothes to change into for class.
Personal Management: 1st Class Rank; Requirements 1a, 1b; 2a1, 2, 3, 4; 8a, b, c, d; 10a & 10b (if time allows, will talk about & finish in class that day). Bring copy of Personal Management merit badge workbook to class.
Photography: Requirement 1b (Bring your current, up-to-date Cyber Chip to class); 4 and 5 (Bring a camera to class and we will work on these requirements in class); 7 (Be prepared to share your visual story with class. A poster board or electronic presentation is acceptable. Use only 8-12 images.)
Rifle Shooting: Scouts may change into Class B for the class. No open-toed shoes. Will need 2 drivers, as the class will go off-campus.
Robotics: None.
Safety: 1a-d, 2a-b, & 6.
Search and Rescue: None.
Sustainability: Requirement 1; Requirement 2 Water-Do A; Requirement 2 Food-Do A; Requirement 2 Stuff-Do A; These prerequisites must be done prior to class in order to take Sustainability at the Linn MBU, so please bring the completed requirements with you to class.
Welding: Wear Field (Class A) uniform to opening ceremony; bring jeans and enclosed shoes to change into for class; no shorts or open toed shoes will be allowed; need 3 adult leaders.
