Unbelievable Science - Geology - Rocks, Fossils & Lava

(brought to you by the University of Missouri’s Geological Sciences Department as part of the Science on Wheels program)
Date: February 7, 2026
Time: 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Ages: 6 to 11
Cost: $6 per person

  1. Get ready to dig deep into the fascinating world beneath your feet! In this hands-on, adventure-packed experience, students will explore the wonders of geology through real rocks, dazzling crystals, ancient fossils, and flowing lava simulations.
  2. Rock & Crystal Discovery: Students will examine real-life minerals and rocks, comparing them to those found in the popular video game Minecraft! Discover stunning crystals that haven’t made it into the game yet—and craft your very own Minecraft-inspired crystal cube to take home!
  3. Lava Lab Experiments: Ever wondered how lava flows? Students will experiment with different chemical compositions and slopes to see how viscosity affects lava movement. It’s messy, it’s fun, and it’s science in action!
  4. Fossil Exploration: Hold history in your hands! Students will observe real fossils from across the U.S., including Missouri’s own state fossil—the crinoid. They’ll connect fossils to life-like reconstructions and even create their own trace fossil keepsake to take home.
  5. Meet the Scientists: Students will have the chance to ask questions and interact with graduate students from Mizzou’s Geological Sciences Department, all trained in science outreach and communication. It’s a unique opportunity to learn directly from the experts!

JOURNEY INTO THE EARTH'S PAST AND PRESENT—WHERE SCIENCE MEETS CREATIVITY AND CURIOSITY!
