Innovation Space - Engineering Merit Badge

Join us at the Scouting Adventure Center on February 3rd to earn the Engineering Merit Badge.

This is the second merit badge being offered as part of the 2024 Innovation Space Merit Badge Series.

Engineers use both science and technology to turn ideas into reality, devising all sorts of things, ranging from a tiny, low-cost battery for your cell phone to a gigantic dam across the mighty Yangtze River in China.

About:

  • This is a half day merit badge from 8:30 to 11:30am.
  • All prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of class.
  • Prerequisites will be detailed in the course catalog and at the bottom of this section when they become available.
  • All Blue Cards will be completed and available digitally within one week of the event. For access to your blue cards follow the below directions.

Notes:

  • Optional – Scouts may bring their smart phones, tablet, or laptop for research during the program. If you do not have one of these devices, we have a few for use in the classroom, or you will partner up if needed.
  • Each participant will receive a Mechanics - Levers, Linkages & Structures Kit for use in class. At the completion of the course each participant will be able to take there kit home and continue to construct any of the 16 model options that are included in the kit

Prerequisites:

  • Requirement 3.  Pick two of the six types of engineers and be prepared to explain how their work is related.  Bring your notes.
  • Requirement 5. Learn about the systems engineering approach to design. Brainstorm an original piece of patrol equipment, a toy or a useful device for the home, office, or garage, and we will make a sketch or drawing of the design in class.  Be prepared to explain how and what materials would be used for construction, and what the value or benefit of the object would be.
  • Requirement 6. Make a list of 10 electrical appliances in your home. Find out approximately how much electricity each uses in one month. Learn how to find out the amount and cost of electricity used in your home during periods of light and heavy use. List five ways to conserve electricity.
