Width (clearance) between wheels - 1-3/4"
Bottom clearance between car and track – 1/4"
RULES
1. Construction
a. Wheel bearings, washers, hubcaps and bushings are prohibited.
b. The car shall not ride on springs.
c. Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are
permitted; i.e. only those included in the kit.
d. Do not cover the axels on the underside of the car. It must be obvious to the
judges that the wheels and the nails from the kit are being used.
e. Only dry lubricant is permitted.
f. Details, such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these
details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.
g. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
h. All 4 wheels must full make contact with the track. Wheels cannot ride on the
edges or any high points.
i. The wheels cannot be modified in any way other than sanding off any
manufacturing defects on the rolling surface of the wheel.
j. The car shall have no moving parts. Use of weights that shift while the car is
in motion is prohibited.
k. The race car may not be constructed or treated in such a way that the track's
starting mechanism imparts momentum to the car. (For instance, this
provision disqualifies cars with sticky substances on the front of the car and
protrusions which may catch on the starting pin.)
l. The car must have been made during the current school year.
2. Inspection
a. Each car must pass inspection by the race judges before it may compete.
b. If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed
of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time
period to make the adjustment.
c. After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in
handling or in a race.
d. The inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet these
specifications.
3. Race Rules
a. Car Interference: If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with
another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets
into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically
loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat

will be run a third time but without the disqualified car. (However, see Track
Fault below.)
b. Car Repair: If, during the race, a wheel falls off or the car becomes otherwise
damaged, then the SCOUT and his pit crew may to the best of his ability
perform repairs.
c. Car Leaves Lane: If, during a race heat, a car leaves its lane but proceeds
down the track in a manner that does not interfere with an opponent, then the
race will be called normally.
d. Car Leaves Track: If, during a race heat, a car leaves the track without
interfering with its opponent, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at
that point. (However, see Track Fault below.)
e. Track Fault: If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the track chairman
may inspect the track and, if a track fault is found which probably caused the
initial violation, the track chairman may order the race heat to be rerun after
the track is repaired.
f. No Finishers: If, during a race heat, no car reaches the finish line on the
track, the car which went the farthest in its lane shall be declared as the heat
winner.
