Introduction to Kayaking & Returning Rollers

Have you ever wanted to whitewater kayak? Have you ever dreamed of paddling a kayak on the ocean or on one of the Great Lakes? While it is cold outside, learn all about kayaking in a warm pool! A team of certified instructors will help you become familiar with the different types of kayaks (sea kayaks, whitewater kayaks, recreational kayaks, and whitewater canoes). They will help you find a boat and the gear to fit you for success.  This is a great way to have some fun and meet some new people.  

In the pool, you will first start with a BSA swim check, which will be good for all of 2024 including Summer Camp! Once your swimming ability has been defined, participants will learn how to perform a self-rescue (wet exit), balance drills, paddle strokes, and an introduction to assisted rescues and rolling. (Yes, some may get a roll or two!) Individuals are welcome to come and continue to work on their skills, including perfecting your roll! Join the Whitewater Adventure team from the Bay-Lakes Council and have some warm and wet fun! Participants are welcome at as many sessions as they want!

Note: This is not a Merit Badge Course.  While we are happy to assist the Scout in attaining the Kayaking Merit Badge, due to the complexity, it can not be done in one session.  If you are seeking a Merit Badge opportunity, please contact the coordinators to set something up.

Who: All Scouts 11 years or older, adult leaders, and/or parents.  All participants MUST pass the BSA swim qualification at the beginning of the session.

Where: Appleton YMCA - Buchanan Pool

When: 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM
March 3, 17, & 24

Bring:  Swimsuit, towel, goggles (if needed) & BSA Medical Form Parts A and B. Everything else provided

Cost: $25.00 per session for youth and $20.00 per session for adults.
