CAMPOREE PAUL BUNYAN WOODSMAN DAYS
Join us for a weekend of Paul Bunyan Feats of strength and sharpen your “Totin Chip” skills while earning the Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award.
- Can you safely use saws and axes in the “bucking” process to cut the tress into appropriate lengths?
- Are your lashings and know skills adequate to help lasso Babe, create a box car to transport fellow Scouts, help Paul Bunyan move a heavy log and create a ball launcher to play fetch with Babe?
- Do you have the appetite of Paul Bunyan? Test your pancake cooking and flipping skills.
- Is your Troop strong enough to drag a one ton Blue Ox 50 feet?
- Come find out if your Patrol and Troop have the strength, endurance and skills of Paul Bunyan!!!!
We will be making every effort for the Scouts to earn their Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award – to make this happen we need to ask to borrow the following from each Troop:
- Provide one (1) axe and one (1) bow saw to be turned in at registration labeled with their Troop number.
Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award:
- Show that you have earned the Totin’ Chip.
- Help a Scout or patrol earn the Totin’ Chip, and demonstrate to him (them) the value of proper woods-tools use on a troop camping trip.
- With official approval and supervision, do one of the following:
- Clear trails or fire lanes for two hours.
- Trim a downed tree, cut into four-foot lengths, and stack; make a brush with branches. (we will be working on this requirement at camp)
- Build a natural retaining wall or irrigation way to aid in a planned conservation effort.
Troop Pre-requisites:
- Show that you have earned the Totin’ Chip.
- Help a Scout or patrol earn the Totin’ Chip.
To satisfy this requirement – we are asking each Troop to perform two tasks:
- Ensure that all Scouts attending the Camporee has earned their Totin’ Chip.
- At one Troop Meeting prior to the Camporee – hold a Totin’ Chip refresher course for all scouts.
- Organize the “refresher course” so that Scouts are teaching Scouts.
- Emphasis on axe and saw safety would be beneficial.
