Hiawathaland District IOLS & BALOO
There are three separate training programs offered at the Outdoor Seminar this year. Courses vary from 5-hours to 3-days on the April 30 – May 2 weekend.
Courses offered:
BALOO – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (Sat 9am – Sun noon) $35
IOLS – Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (Fri 7pm – Sun 8am) $40
PST-SM – Position Specific Training – Scoutmaster (Sun 8am – 1pm) $10
Also, Venture Crews may send newer youth and adults to IOLS to gain some basic outdoor skills.
Covid-19 Concerns – We are all hopeful that vaccines and improved treatment options will allow us more freedom this spring. However, the bottom line will always be, “What can we do, Safely”. Fortunately, most of the training programs are designed around small groups (Dens or Patrols), that can easily social distance from other groups, while we do most things outdoors. I expect we will have more Dens/Patrols, of smaller sizes, this time around to reduce close contacts between individuals.
Adventure Trail – One major thing we will not offer this year is the ‘Adventure Trail’ for youth. Having children of the participants intermingle, and then rejoin their parents at meals, and in tents at night, would negate any attempts to limit contacts between our adult participants. Many Outdoor Seminar programs are hands-on, but they are designed for adults.
As the date approaches, we will be watching infection rates and health department directives, to make our final decisions.
