This course is 16 hours long, including Basic Instructor Training/BIT, and includes classroom and range time learning how to teach shooting revolvers and semiautomatic pistols.
Instructor candidates learn how to teach NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Candidates will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting Instructor Manual, take a Basics of Pistol Instructor Shooting Examination and receive a course completion certificate.
To qualify as an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor:
- Must have taken and passed the student level NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course - Instructor led course only. (The online NRA Basic Pistol Course does not qualify.)
- Candidate must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified.
- Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearms handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing pre-course questionnaires and qualification exercises administered by the NRA Appointed Training Counselor.
- Candidates must satisfactorily complete and NRA Instructor Training Course in the discipline they wish to teach (eg., NRA Basic Pistol Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting that training.
PLEASE NOTE: Credentials are issued by the NRA training department; therefore, there are also additional certification processing fees payable directly to the NRA.
To keep costs low for participants we are asking that you plan to pack and provide your own camping meals. You will have access to the kitchen in the Leaders Building at camp, but the expectation is that you will leave that kitchen and any utensils used clean and neat.
John Techmeier will be your lead instructor. John may reach out and help arrange some community meals if folks have interest.
Participants who choose to stay at camp overnight must be registered members of Scouting America with an up-to-date Youth Protection Training Certificate on file with Bay-Lakes Council.
Participants need to bring with them a copy of their Scouting America Health and Medical Record Parts A & B.
Overnight participants will be staying in one of the small staff cabins; it is likely that you will be sharing a cabin with up to three others (seperated by age and gender).
Any adult participants who are not registered members with Scouting America, may not spend the night at camp because we have youth members on the property at the same time (some of whom will be your classmates).
If you are signing up for both the NRA Pistol Instructor Course AND the NRA Rifle Instructor Course in June, you only need to take the Basic Instructor Training/BIT portion once, so you would not need to arrive to camp for the June session until Saturday afternoon. Course Instructor will cover this with those of you who sign up for both.
DO NOT BRING PERSONAL FIREARMS TO THIS TRAINING.
Firearms necessary for this training will be available for your use.
Under no circumstances are firearms other than those owned and maintained by the local council which operates the camp permitted on Scouting America ranges and properties.
