Climbing Instructor Training

Event Details

This registration is for our Climbing Instructor course. Being an instructor gives you the ability to lead and facilitate Climbing activities for your Troop or Crew. This course is $50 and only for Glaciers Edge Council Volunteers 21+

Previous COPE or Climbing Experience is highly encouraged. Certification at the end of this course is not guaranteed. Introduction to COPE and Climbing is encouraged; that course will be held September 27th at EBSR. You should review the Climb-On Safely Training Outline and Belay-On documents and be familiar with CHOP and PBUS belay Methods. This training will teach the skills of Belaying, Backup Belaying, Tower Setup, and Rappelling. These skills will not be covered during the October Training Weekend.

On October 23rd-25th, we will hold the Climbing Instructor Training at EBSR and surrounding areas. This course will focus on the technical aspects of natural rock climbing including rescues, anchor building, and more! Successful completion of this course would result in a Climbing Level II Instructor Card which would allow you to facilitate natural rock climbing activities for your Troop or Crew. Certification at the end of the course is not guaranteed. You should review the Climbing section of Scouting America's "Belay-On" Manual. Other helpful resources though not required are: Climbing Anchors by John Long and Bob Gaines, Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills (10th Edition), and Down: The Complete Descent Manual for Climbers by Andy Kirkpatrick. These resources are supplemental to our training and not required. Copies will be available during training.

Please bring the following with you: Health Forms A&B, Youth Protection Certificate and show proof of completion of Climb-On Safely.

Please complete the BSA Climb-On Safely Training, found on my.scouting.org prior to this course. We will not have time to conduct this training.

Please eat prior to, or bring your own dinner for Friday night. Meals will be provided Saturday, and Sunday Breakfast and Lunch.

Please be prepared for strenuous hikes with heavy gear.
