Welcome to the leader’s packet for the 2022 Glacier’s Edge First Aid Meet, to be known as “The Crucible”.
The central theme of this event is to assess how well scouts have learned the objectives and skills of the first aid merit badge and for the patrol leader to harness that understanding to cohesively, as a unit, address different first aid scenarios. The First Aid Meet is not designed to teach these skills but assess how well the scouts have learned these skills and apply them as patrols. Furthermore, the program is designed as a competition to increase the intensity of each scenario on the place of a real-life scenario.
As we have seen recently with the two Appleton BSA troops that were required to be the first responders during the Amtrak train derailing, that an emergency-situation can take place at any time. The individual scouts present undoubtedly saved lives as well provide aid and comfort to the many people injured during the accident. This situation, and the abilities of these scouts to act, best highlights our motto: Be Prepared. This First Aid Meet is designed to meet that motto.
The goal here is to provide the opportunity for each patrol of six scouts to meet with ~12 scenarios that will deal with hurry cases, trauma, heat/cold first aid, etc. Roughly 25 minutes will be available for the scenario with debrief and another five minutes to travel to the next station. The pace of this event will be fast.
NOTE: The unit registration deadline is October 28th, 2022
Unit leaders must do their best to register their scouts by the deadline. Units registered by the deadlinewill be allowed to add additional scouts withour penalty to up to the day of the event (with a max of six scouts per patrol, troops may register up to two patrols. Additional patrols will be put on a wait list until the October 28th).

Event Summary
The first aid meet events are connected in theme to essential rank requirements and first aid merit badge. The scenarios and events of the meet are intended to test and assess the program development and learning gained at the patrol level. The First Aid Meet is not intende to be the primary source of education and instruction on these critical skills. The competition intends for Scouts to have an opportunity to test their abilities with a debrief from knowledgeable guides to see strengths and opportunities in their respective training, not to make scouts experts or devalue their current knowledge. We hope to expose scouts to where they may have gaps in their training as well as highlight their current progress.
First Aid Program
Saturday morning starts with registration and opening remarks by the Firt Aid meeting staff, as well as basic ground rules for the event itself. This will run from 9 Am and end at 9:25 AM, the scenarios start promptly at 9:30 AM. We will take a break at noon for lunch and then restart at 12:30 PM.
The following is a general breakdown of subject areas:
Splints/Broken Bones, Hurry Cases (Severe Bleeding, Poison, Stopped Breathing, Heart Attack), Shock, Heat Stroke, Heat Exhaustion, Hypothermia, Frostbite, Bruises, Strains, Sprains, Litters and Carries.
The day will consist of roughly 12, 30 minute slots for patrols to interact to complete their scenario, with debrief from scenario leader and a five minute travel time to next scenario. Each patrol should interact in 12 scenarios. It’s up to the patrol to show up on time and ready to go at their respective scenarios, each patrol will be provided with a unique schedule for the day. This is to make sure that no two patrols hit the same scenario at the same time.
What to Bring
The event will be held indoors except for maybe one or two scenarios, “Be Prepared” for that eventuality as it will be November in Wisconsin.
