NRA Basic Rifle Course

This is NRA Basic Rifle course is a pre-requisite for the NRA Rifle Instructor Course. You must be at least 21 years old to become a certified NRA Instructor. People 16 to 20 years may become assistant or apprentice Instructors. Apprentice and Assistant Instructors that help with NRA classes may be able to advance to the next level of instructor when they reach the appropriate age.

Glaciers Edge and Bay Lakes Council are partnering to offer a NRA Rifle Instructor Course June 6-7 at Ed Bryant Scout Reservation. The BSA Shooting Sports website also has listings for NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor courses. Other courses may become available.

To work with Scouts BSA on live fire ranges outside of Council and District camps, two people, an NRA Certified Instructor and an NRA Range Safety Officer each at least 21 years must supervise the range.

NRA Basic Rifle Course Information:

This course will be held at Ed Bryant Scout Reservation and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot Rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; Proper operation of bolt action and semi-automatic rifles, ammunition knowledge and selection, rifle selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, rifle inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with a NRA certified Instructor. Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, take the Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate.

Who:

Open to registered Scouters 18 years of age and older and Scouts BSA or Venture Scouts at least 14 years old. Completion of this course meets many of the requirements for the BSA Rifle Merit Badge.

When:

Saturday, May 3, 2025, Check in begins at 8:00 am. Class runs from 8:30am to approximately 5:30pm.

Registration fee- $35

Fee includes student packet, ammunition, use of .22 rifle and lunch. (Due to Council policy, participants are not allowed to bring their personal firearms to camp).
