2025 KLONDIKE---

 

 Cost is $20 a scout and $10 adults. Troops are invited to camp Friday night January 26th and or Saturday night.  Maximum of 8 scouts per sled.  Minimum of 4 scouts per sled.  The Klondike will consist of 8 events. . Registration closes the week before (January 18).

EVENTS:               Saturday Morning Check in 8:00am and Klondike begins at 9:00am

  • Knots and Lashing:  Do you know your basic knots?  Can you make a useful camp gadget?  You will need 3 to 5 staves and rope for lashing and tying knots.
  • Tree Identification:  A good pioneer knows their trees and can identify them by leaves and bark.  You will be identifying trees by pictures of their leaves and bark. Which are good for lumber and which make the best fires?
  • Log Splitting:  Before we had hydraulic log splitters we split logs with wedges and mauls.  No axes will be allowed!  Once your logs are split you will transport them to the dining hall.  Fort Steuben will supply wedges and a maul if your troop does not have them.  You will split one log with a maul and one log with a wedge.
  • Fire Building:  Start a fire 3 different ways.  One way will be with matches.  You will be given 3 matches to start your fire.  The other two ways are up to you but all three must be different.  No lighters allowed.  Bring your own kindling and wood.  A fire will be considered burning when there are flames approximately 2 inches above the top of the wood for 2 minutes.
  • First Aide: If the worst happens will you be prepared?  You will be required to splint a broken limb.  You will then need to make a stretcher (probably want a blanket and two strong staves) and transport your injured buddy a prescribed distance.  You will also be ask general first aid questions.
  • Archery:  Each scout will shoot 5 arrows.  Top 5 scores will be added together to get the sled’s score.
  • Rifle shooting: Each scout will shoot 5 rounds.  Top 5 scores will be added together to get the sled’s score.  Scouts will be shooting at golf balls.  A hit on the golf ball is worth 1 point.
  • Shotgun shooting: Each scout will shoot at 5 clays.  Top 5 scores will be added together to get the sled’s score.  Each busted clay is worth 1point.

Prizes will be given to the top three scoring sleds.

Webelos/Arrow of Lights are Welcome to Attend. Maximum of 8 scouts per sled.  Minimum of 4 scouts per sled. Cost $20 a Scout and $10 Adult.

The Ohio River Valley Council's Klondike Derby is an event where Scouts throughout the area gather and practice winter camping (weather depending), as well as compete in a test of scouting skills.
