2019 Merit Badge University

Merit Badge University is an opportunity for Scouts BSA members to work on an array of merit badges at West Virginia's flagship institution. Classes are taught throughout the day, and if prerequisites are met, Scouts typically can complete an entire merit badge (or two) in one day while being taught by experts in the field!

NOTES:  Pre-registration for Merit Badge University is now closed. A limited number of openings are available on the day of MBU, specifically in the Environmental Science merit badge. If you want to register on the day of MBU, please arrive early with your parent/guardian and payment to complete registration.

Prerequisites for merit badge completions can be found in the attachments section in a standalone document as well as listed with each class in the "Class Catalog" document.

  • Check-in:  8:00-8:45 AM
  • Opening Ceremony:  8:45-9:00 AM
  • Merit Badge Session 1:  9:15 AM-12:15 PM
  • Lunch:  12:30-1:15 PM
  • Merit Badge Session 2:  1:30-5:00 PM
  • Check-out:  5:00-5:30 PM

Where:  West Virginia University Student Rec Center

Cost$15 (includes event patch & hot dog lunch); adult Scouters may also register for $15 to receive an event patch and hot dog lunch


Additional Details:

IMPORTANT:  This registration MUST be completed online by a parent/guardian of the youth.  Only one youth is permitted per registration.

Location:  Event will begin and end at the WVU Student Rec Center located at 2001 Rec Center Drive, Morgantown.  It is off Patteson Drive near the Burger King.

Uniform:  All participants must wear a full BSA field uniform ("Class A") or its equivalent for their group.

Bring:  Outerwear to allow walking distances across campus, regardless of the weather.  Scouts should bring a pen and notebook/paper to take notes during merit badge classes and activities.  Bring documentation of any prerequisite completion and a copy of the merit badge pamphlet.

Fee Payment:  To secure your spot(s), payment must be received online with credit card payment.  If you cannot pay by credit card, please contact the Mountaineer Area Council (304-366-3940 or info@macbsa.org) to make arrangements (check, cash, unit account).  Before contacting the Mountaineer Area Council, a registration should be started and stopped at the final payment screen, so all necessary information has been entered.  Spots will not be secured until payment is received.  Refunds for cancellations will not be available.

Scholarships:  If the cost of this event would prohibit a youth from participating, please contact MBU@WVU Coordinator, Dr. Dan McNeil, at mbu.wvu@gmail.com for scholarship information.

Unit Leader Approval:  Prior to completing this registration, Scouts BSA members should get approval from their Scoutmaster to participate in Merit Badge University and to enroll in the selected merit badge(s). By registering, it is assumed that the Scout has received the prior approval.

Prior to MBU:  Complete prerequisite requirements and bring proof of completion to MBU.  Get and read a copy of the BSA's merit badge pamphlet for your assigned badge(s).

Merit Badge Completion:  Participants will be provided documentation of either completion or “partial” completion of the merit badge with a “blue sheet” (equivalent to a “blue card”).  Scouts have the option of bringing a blue card with them to MBU, to be completed by the counselor.  This is optional. It is not necessary to mail in blue cards prior to MBU.

Adult Scout Leader Training:  There are various training opportunities available for adult Scout leaders during the morning session.  Contact Paul White, Mountaineer Area Council VP of Training to schedule specific training needs at hotrodpw@hotmail.com.

Event Sponsorship:  MBU is sponsored by West Virginia University, in concert with Mountaineer Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Support is provided by WVU’s Scouting Initiative, Adventure West Virginia, WVU Rec Center, the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources,  Psychology Club and Psi Chi Psychology Honorary, other WVU student groups, “Mountaineers for Scouting,” and MAC Program and Advancement Committees.

Evening Use of the Rec Center:  At the conclusion of MBU, after 5 pm, Scouts and leaders/parents may use the WVU Rec Center. The fee is $6, to be paid in cash at the Rec Center registration desk, for each individual.  In this evening activity, all youth must be supervised by adults who are physically present at the Rec Center, consistent with the BSA Youth Protection Guidelines.

Registration Agreements:  This online registration serves as both event registration and parent/guardian consent/photo release for youth to take part in West Virginia University's 2019 Merit Badge University. Efforts will be made to make sure that each Scout will get his or her top choices for badge assignments, but space is limited in each session. Classes with low enrollments are subject to cancellation. Questions can be emailed to WVU@MBU Coordinator, Dr. Dan McNeil, at mbu.wvu@gmail.com.

  • Parent/Guardian Consent:  Consent will be given by registration of the Scout(s).  The policies and guidelines of the Guide to Safe Scouting will be enforced at the event.  Additionally, all merit badge counselors and key volunteers have been trained in Youth Protection per WVU's BOG Rule 1.7, which is viewable online here.
  • Photo Release:  For the privilege of participating in Boy Scouts of America activities at West Virginia University, those registered give consent for their image and likeness to be videotaped, audiotaped, or photographed for the following uses:  educational/instructional media, recruitment/outreach media, development media, and newsworthy media documentation. Boy Scouts of America, Mountaineer Area Council, West Virginia University and/or West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc., and their component parts are authorized to use this electronic media and/or photographs in any manner---whole, or in part. This waiver includes usage of this media in any way deemed appropriate, which may include electronic and photographical reproductions thereof for the production of educational, instructional, promotional, or institutional advancement materials which support the educational and outreach activities of West Virginia University. Any right is waived to inspect or approve any use of this electronic media and/or photographs and Boy Scouts of America, Mountaineer Area Council, West Virginia University, and its component parts are released from all liability which could result from its use.
  • Hold Harmless Agreement:  It is understood that participation in any activity involves a certain degree of risk. By registering, consent is given that the parent/guardian has carefully considered the risk involved and is permitting the child to participate in the activity. It is understood that participation in the activity is entirely voluntary and requires participants to abide by applicable rules and standards of conduct. The Boy Scouts of America, the local council, the activity coordinators, and all employees, volunteers, related parties, or other organizations associated with the activity are released from any and all claims or liability arising out of this participation.
  • Emergency Treatment:  In case of emergency involving, it is understood that every effort will be made to contact the parent/guardian. In the event they cannot be reached, permission is given to the medical provider selected by the adult leader in charge to secure proper treatment, including hospitalization, anesthesia, surgery, or injections of medication for my child. Medical providers are authorized to disclose to the adult in charge examination findings, test results, and treatment provided for purposes of medical evaluation of the participant, follow-up and communication with the participant’s parents or guardians, and/or determination of the participant’s ability to continue in the program activities.
