Merit Badge College is an opportunity for Scouts BSA members to work on an array of merit badges taught by professors and professionals of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Classes are taught throughout the day, and if prerequisites are met, Scouts typically can complete an entire merit badge in one day while being taught by experts in the field!

 

WHEN Saturday, November 2, 2024; 8:30AM - 3:00PM 

  • 8:15 - 9:00AM: Registration & Admissions Meet N' Greet | Performing Arts Center
  • 9:00 - 9:15AM:  Opening Ceremony | Performing Arts Center
  • 9:30AM - 12:00PM:  Merit badge College Sessions | various locations
  • 12:00 - 12:45PM:  Lunch, French A. See Dining Hall
  • 1:00 - 3:00PM:  Merit Badge College Sessions (continued) | various locations

WHERE:  West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, WV

COST $30 ($25 if paid by October 2)

Prior to completing this registration, Scouts MUST have secured approval from their unit leader to participate in Merit Badge College and to enroll in the selected merit badge. By registering, it is assumed that the Scout has received the prior approval.

MERIT BADGES OFFERED: 

MERIT BADGE PREREQUISITES
Bird Study
(max 20 Scouts)
  • Research and prepare a short paragraph explaining why birds are useful indicators of the quality of the environment and how they are part of the ecosystem.
  • Research and prepare a short paragraph explaining the difference between extinct, endangered, and threatened species. Identify one species that is endangered or threatened, and discuss why that species has declined in the past or present.
  • Research and prepare a short paragraph identifying a career opportunity connected to the study of birds and describe the education, training, and experience needed for this profession.
  • Bring binoculars if the Scout has access to a pair.
Electronics
(max 4 Scouts)
  • Scouts grades 9-12
First Aid
(max 20 Scouts)
  • No age limit, but the Scouts must be able to compress a manikin chest up to 2”
Game Design
(max 14 Scouts)
  • Scouts ages 12 and up

UNIFORM: All participants should wear a full BSA field uniform ("Class A") or its equivalent for their group. 

TO BRING:  Water bottle, anything mentioned for the specific class

PRIOR TO MBU:  Obtain and read a copy of the BSA's merit badge pamphlet for your assigned merit badge. 

CHECK-IN PROCESS: Scouts will check in between 8:15-9:00AM at the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts

CHECK-OUT PROCESS: Scouts will check out at 3:00PM at the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts

PARKING:    As you head down College Avenue and approach the stop sign next to the West Virginia Wesleyan College sign, the O’Roark-Nordstrom Welcome Center will be just to your left and the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts just ahead, also on your left.  Parking Lot N which lies between these two buildings, will be the best location for parking. ADVANCEMENT RECORDS: Physical blue cards will not be used. One week following Merit Badge College, Scout advancement records will be available electronically via their registration.  An email will be sent to the registration contact person with instructions for obtaining. 

CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY:

  • In the event a merit badge session is canceled, a full refund will be issued to those registered.
  • In the event that the Scout is no longer able to attend:
    • a partial refund may be issued if a cancellation email is sent to info@macbsa.org by October 25 and the spot can be filled by a Scout from the waitlist.
    • no refunds will be issued for cancellations after October 25
