Scouts BSA Merit Badge Mini-Camps

Camp Mountaineer

WHEN: August 2 - 6, 2021. Individual merit badge sessions.

WHERE: Camp Mountaineer

COST: $15 per session

• Includes materials, snacks and water and use of facilities 
   
• Prior to completing this registration, Scouts must have secured approval from their unit leader to enroll in the selected merit badge(s). By registering, it is assumed that the Scout has received the prior approval.
• Scouts are responible for reviewing the appropriate merit badge booklet prior to attending the merit badge session.

BLUE CARDS: Physical blue cards will not be used. Scout advancement records will be available electronically using the registration confirmation email. 

UNIFORM: Participants should wear a full BSA field uniform ("Class A") or its equivalent for their group. 

MONDAY: (two separate merit badge offerings)

• Climbing Merit Badge
  • 9AM - 4PM (check in 8:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 4PM on the Trading Post Porch)
  • Scouts are welcome to start Climbing merit badge this day and do as much as they can. Scouts who have already started Climbing and want to try to finish are welcome as well.) Bring advancement records of any already-started Climbing merit badge. 
     
• Citizenship in the World Merit Badge
  • 10AM - 3PM (check-in 9:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 3PM on Trading Post Porch)
  • Bring a laptop or tablet, if possible
  • Class is best suited for older Scouts (high school) 

TUESDAY: 

• Rifle, Shotgun and Archery Merit Badges
  • Make-up/Completion Opportunity. This session is designed for Scouts who have already started their merit badge. This session will NOT start a merit badge from the beginning. Scouts should bring any advancement records relevant to these merit badges.
  • 9AM - 3PM (check-in 8:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 3PM on Trading Post Porch)

WEDNESDAY: (two separate merit badge offerings)

• Weather Merit Badge
  • 9AM - 1PM (check-in 8:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 1PM on Trading Post Porch)
     
• Fly Fishing Merit Badge CLASS FULL 
  • 4PM - 8PM (check-in 3:30 on Trading Post Porch, check-out 8PM on Trading Post Porch)

THURSDAY: 

• Whoosh! Nova Award (includes Engineering Merit Badge)
  • 9AM - 1PM (check-in 8:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 1PM on Trading Post Porch) 

Pre-requisites:

Requirement 1
Watch, read, or do a combo about three hours total of engineering-related shows or documentaries that involve motion or motion-inspired technology. Then do the following:
(1) Make a list of at least five questions or ideas from the show(s) you watched.
(2) Discuss two of the questions or ideas with your counselor.

• Sally Ride: A Photobiography of America’s Pioneering Woman in Space by Tam O’Shaughnessy
• Ask an Astronaut: My Guide to Life in Space by Tim Peake

• Prerequisite Requirement 5
  1. On your own, design one of the following and include a drawing or sketch: an amusement park ride OR a playground fixture OR a method of transportation.

FRIDAY: 

• First Aid Merit Badge 
  • 9AM - 2PM (check-in 8:30 at Welcome Center, check-out 2PM on Trading Post Porch)
  • Pre-requisites: #5 and #7. Email Dr. Lee Pyles: pyles001@gmail.com with any questions. 

Don't forget to bring: 

• Bagged lunch or snacks
• Refillable water bottle
• Sunscreen
• Appropriate camp footwear (no flip flops!)
• Money for Trading Post 
• Any current advancement records for merit badges already started 
• BSA medical form parts A&B (attached)
